Tbere are between one hundred and seveoty-fivs and two hundred thousand bales of cotton produced within a radius cf twenty-five miles from Sumter and at least fifty thousand bales should be broogbt here by higher prices that the loca tion of the compress will enable the buyers to give for cotton. The work of the Fire Department is admit ted by all observers to compare favorably with that of the best organized departments io the larger cities, and on every occasion that has demanded quick and intelligent work to prevent a serious and costly fire tfee two reel squads have proven fully equal to the emergency. The most recent fire at which they demonstrated their abilty as fire fighters, was the fire at the Telephone Fac tory, and that good work was done all who have vieited the factory since the fire re willing to admit. The reel squads saved the factory from en tire destruction, and what would otherwise have been a heavy loss was held down to a few thousands by checking the flames before the sjain building was seriously damaged. The Board of Directors of the Telephone Manufacturing Company appreciate the good work cf the two reel squads, and they have expressed their appreciation in a graceful as well as substantial manner. On Saturday afternoon each reel squad, Monaghan No 2 and Delger No. 3, received the followiog letter with a check fer $50 enclosed : ' Sumter, S. C., April 1, 1839. Gentlemen : At a meeting of the Board of Directors of ; The Telephone Mfg Co , held this morning, j I am instructed to express to you their i appreciation of your prompt aod efficient i work performed at the fire which occurred at I our factory Thursday morning. The skilled I way in which you handled the fire is the only reason why our factory was not totally destroyed. Please accept the enclosed with the thanks and congratulations of our company. Very truly yours, THE TELEPHONE M'F'G Co , Hiram J Grover, Sect'y. The members of the reel squads work without expecting any reward save the approval of conscience, that follows the performance of duty, nevertheless, the letters of thanks and : the checks were none the less appreciated. The Sumter & Wateres embankment through Green Swamp is nearing comple tioa. If you have a cough, throat irritation* ! weak langs, pain ia the chest, difficult breathing, croup or hoarseness, let us suggest Oee Minute Cough Core. Always reliable aod safe.-rHoghson-Ligon Co. The Easter ball will be given on th's evening at the Sumter Club. The dance will be a fashionable and largely attended affair, aod the young people who dance are looking forward to it with a great deal of pleasure. For frost bites, burns, indolent sores, ec Z3ma, skin disease, aod especially Piles, De Witt's Witch fl ze! Salve stands first and beet. Look out for dishonest people who try to imitate and counterfeit it. lt's their en doreement of a good artiele. Worthless goods are not imitated. Get De Witt's Witch Bezel Salve. Hugbsou-Ligon Co. A negro cow thief was captured on Main Street Thursday while in the act of selling a cow which he bad stolor from a negro in the country. I was reading an advertisement of Cham berlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Rem edy in iba Worcester Enterprise recently, i which leads me to write this. I can truthful ! ly say I never used any remedy equal to it for j colic and diarrhoea. I have never had to nee j more than one or two doses to cure the worst j case with myself or children.-W. A. Stroud, ' Popomoke City, Md. For bale by Dr. A. J. China. The Silver section was yesterday visited by a severs wind aod electrical storm which did a vast amount of damage to the forests and agricultural interests. Capt. A. L. Lesesce's barn and stables were struck by lightning and he lost one fine mole, about 10,000 poaods of forage, and grain and farming im plements. His loss is in the neighborhood of $1,000. Captain Lesesne, we are surprised to learn, did not have the property insured. -Manning Times, March 29. In 1888 my wife went East and was attack ed with rhematism. She received no relief until she tried Chamberlain's Pam Balm. Since that time we have never been without it. We find it gives instant relief in esses of burns and scalds end is never failing for ali rheumatic and neuralgic pains -D. C. Brant, Santa Ynez, Cal. For sale by Dr. A J. China. Coroner Moses on last Wednesday afternoon held an investigation upon the body of Willis W Young, a colored mau who died soddenly frcm paralysis. Young bad au attack of the same disease a year or two ago, from which he bad never entirely recovered, and hie death was found to have occurred from natu ral causes. "A word to the wise is scfficieoV aod a word from the wise should be sufficient, but you ask, who are the wise? Those who know. The oft repeated experience of trust worthy persons may be taken for knowledge. Mr. W. M. Terry says Chamberlain's Cough Remedy gives better satisfaction than any otb-1; in the market. He has been ia the drug business at Elktoo, Ky.,- for twelve years; bas sold hundreds of bottles of this remedy and nearly all other cough medicines manufactured, which shows conclusively that Chamberlain's is the most satisfactory to the people, and is the best. For sale by Dr. A. J. China. The business men of Sumter must get to gether, and the City Council must put its shoulder to the wheel also, and every induce ment possible should be held out to the Southern Starch Company for the location of a starch factory bera. Sumter bas many natural advaatages in the way of au inex haustible supply of pure water, obtainable at a cost so trifling that it caa scarcely be taken into consideration as an item of expense, cheap fud, a limitless supply of starch pro ducing material-sweet and Irish potatoes, corn and rice-excellent railroad facil ities, low freight rates, competing lines of railroads to tbe north, to the seaboard sad to the cotton mill cen tres at Augusta and at Spartanburg aod other advantages that will be apparent to those who investigate tbe conditions Sumter can offer inducements that few towns can equal aod DOCS surpass, and it is the duty of all who have an interest in the future ot tbe community to pot forth an effort to make these advantages clearly understood. Tbe prosperity of this country is dependent upon the utilization of the products aod natural advantages so BS to torn them to the best account, creating a market for tbe pro ducts of the farms and furnishing employ ment for tbs many idle bands. A starch fae- j tory would consume not less than 1,C00 bushels of potatoes per day and give employ ment to 50 or 1C0 hands. If a starch fac tory can be induced to locate in Sumter no effort would be too great to secure it. W. B Rawl, New Brooklyn, S. C , writes : Have used Dr. M A. Simmons Liver Med icine many years, and consider it the best liver medicine made. I regard it a mirach compared with Zeilin's Regulator. Fire at Telephone Factory. Fire broke oat io the Tarnish room at the factory of the Telephone Manufacturing Com pany at 3 o'clock last Thursday morning and had gained each headway before dis covered that for n tims it was feared that the 1 entire factory would ba a total loas. Howev er, the fire department responded promptly, and by quick and weU directed work succeed ed io saving the greater part of tbe factory The varnish room and all unfioisbed work io it was a total loss, a portion of the machine room was burned and the main part of the factory was damaged by fire and water The loss is difficult to estimate unlit a thoroueb examination has been trade, for a great deal of the material and electrical sup plies were da ne ged and much of it tbat is apparently unhurt may prove to be totally useless when tested. For instance, a thou sand or more magnetons, which were not bnroed, were utterly ruined by heat, and, though they cost a dollar or liiore each, are not cow worth anythicg. The loss roughly estimated, aggregates from $3,000 to 5,000 and it may exceed the latter sum. Almost a Fire. lamp in Winborn's photograph gallery caught on fire last Wednesday night about 9 o'clock and created snch a blaze that the alarm of fire was given and the reel squads called out. The lamp was thrown out of a window and the fire nipped io the bud be fore any damage was done. The reel Eqaads did not have to turo on the water and the fire was out before it got started. It is to be hoped that the arms and uni forms for the Sumter Light Infantry will be received in time for the company to take part in the ceremonies on Memorial Day. Derangements of Menstrual Fonctions pro duce Miscarriage. Simnoos Squaw Vine Wioe or Tablets correct the derargements. The rumor that tbe Sooth Carolina k Giorgia R R. had been bought by the At lantic Coast Line turns out to be an idle report, without foundation. A Torpid Liver causes Depression of Spirits, Indigestion, Constipation, Headache. Use Dr. M. A. Simmons Liver Medicine to to stimulate that organ. The local members of the Board of Direc tors of the Sumter k Wateree R. R. went to Charleston last night to attend a meeting of the board which will be held to-day. Used during Expectancy, Simmons Squaw Vine Wine or Tablets cheer and Strengthen Mother, Shorten Labor anet Rob Confinement of its Terrors. The organization of the Cotton Compress Co. will be perfected within the next few days aad the compress will be erected with out, delay so that it may be ready for business when the cotton season opens The books of subscription will be opened in accordance with the requirementa'of the law, bot this will be a mere formality as subscriptions to within a couple of thousand dollars of the foll amount of the authorized capital have, been pledged in advance, and this balance will be taken by the original subscribers if it is not taken by parties wbo have not yet sub scribed and want stock in ac enterprise that will benefit Sumter and pay handsome divi dends CompresB stock will unquestionably prove a payiog investment and those who have idle money cannot place it to better advantage. The stock is not going begging, however, and the compress is un assured fact without the as sistance of anyone not now interested in it, consequently the foregoing is simply a pointer to let the public know that there is aa opportunity to get an interest in a good thing while the ground floor is not altogether occupied. Within a year or two the com press stock will be commanding a big pre mium, like the Oil Mill stock, and those who could but did not take stock will be indulg ing io vain regrets and bemoaning their want of business foresight. "Give me a liver regulator and I MO regu late the world," said a genius. The drug gist banded bim a bottle of De Witt's Little Early Risers, the famous little pills. Hugh son-Ligon Co. The City Council will not meet until April 12th. It is expected that at that time the council will take the initiatory step toward the paving of Main Street. Before the discovery of One Minute Cough Cure, ministers were greatly disturbed by coughing congregations. No excuse for it now. Hugbson-Ligon Co The extra communication of Claremont Lodge No 64, A. F M., called for Thursday nigbt bas been postponed. The fence around the Baptist Church is being removed-or at least that portion of it which was left by the robbers J.
