No excuse for it now. Hugbson-Ligon Co.. The Health Officer should look after the people who have mn the discharge pipes from their kiteben sinks and bath rooms into the street. There is considerable complaint con cerning th:s matter, and if in any case it is a nuisance or a menace to the health of the neighborhood it should be remedied. Tbe publication that more than $4,000 of the public school fund of Sumter county have been- spent for maps and charts taxes credulity. Tbe public school" need longer terms much more thao maps aod charts. For a qaick' remedy and one that is per fectly sate for children let us recommend Oae Minute Cough Cure. It is excellent for croap, hoarseness, tickling in the throat and coughs. Bog on-iifgou Co. The plants on-Mr. W. M. Always reliable ed safe.-Hugbson-Ligon Co. The dispensary bas been whitewashed and the floor scoured. What next? Now is tbs time for the City Council aod the business men of tbe city to unite in asking for a union depot and shed for toe proper accommodation of the traveling public If any place needs better depot accommodation, Sumter arcs. Tbs Sumter Wateree Railroad will have to build a pas senger depot in a short time, and there is no reason why tbe Atlantic Coast Line should not unite with them and erect a first class depot. J. Sheer, Sedalia, Ho , conductor on elec tric street ear lina, writes that bis little daughter waa-very-loir with croup, and her life oaved after all physicians bad failed, only by using One Minute Cough Cure. Toe claims of volunteers in the late war, wbo paid tbair expenses to Columbia aod took receipts therefor in expectation of being reimbursed by tbe State, cannot now be paid as was expected, cn account of tbs mis take of tbe engrossing clerk who failed to pot io tbe appropriation bill the ameodment providing for the payment of the above claims. For frost biies, burns, indolent sores, ec zema, skin disease, and especially Piles, De Witt's Witcb Bezel Salve stands first and best. Look out for dishonest people who try to imitate and counterfeit it. It's their en dorsement of a good artiele. Worthless goods are not imitated. Get De Wi it's Witch Hazel Salve. Hogbson-Ligon Co. The finance committee of City Council, at the regular meeting to-night, will recom mend that the work of macadamizing Main Street begin at once. It is not contemplated thai Main Street be macadamized from eod to end at once, oat a portion of it will be macadamized now aod tbe work continued from time to time as funds become available If a start is not made tbs street will never be macadamized, and if the work is. to wait outil the money to pay for all of it accumu lates io the treasury, Sumter folks will con tinue to feel ashamed of their main thorough fare until the end of time. As tbs season of tbe year when pneumonia, la grippe, sore throat, coughs, colds, catarrh, bronchitis and long troubles are to be guard ed against, nothing "is a fine substitute," will "answer tbe purpose," or is "jost as good" as One Minute Cough Care. That is the oae infallible remedy for all long, throat or bronchial troubles. Insist vigorously upon having it if "something else" is offered you. Hugbson-Ligon Co. We pc.biish an advertisement of Kodol Dyspepsia Cure io our columns thia issue, and wish to sa? to our patrons that we be lieve this preparation is worthy of a trial by any person suffering from this agonizing complaint. We honestly believe this prepa ration will do for you ail the manufacturers claim for it. Kcdol Dyspepsia Core is pre pared by the weil known an reliable firm of fi. C. DeWitt & Co., Chicago, and from our long experience in a business sense, with this firm as advertisers, we feel safe in saying that they would not place on the market a prepa ration for the enre of Dyspepsia unless they bad a remedy of the highest merit, and con scientiously believed it would core tbis well known and almost universal complaint. We further add that if this preparation ia equal to the other weil known remedies wbich they make, viz : DeWitt's Little Early Risers, DeWitt's Witch Hazel Salve, and One Minute Cough Cure, it will speedily win its way into public favor. We cheerfully and heartily give our per sonal endorsement to mis concern, and the reliability of the goods tbey manufacture, which bare been largely tba means of their success, and io writing this Tolontary en dorsement on our part, we feei tbat we are simply performing a duty which we owe to our patrons . While Jailor Windham was at church SUD day three of the roar prisoners confined io the jail picked a hole in i be brick wall and mada their escape. The fourth prisoner, Tons Taylor, who is kept in jail, nnder a life sentence in the penitentiary, pending an ap peal to the supreme conrt, did riot join bis fellow prisoners in their break for liberty, and from bim the particulars of the escape were ascertained. The three daring jail breakers were Daniel Koines, who is charged with burglary and larceny ; Zeke White, charged with obtain ing gooda under false pretences ; Jack Hanks, a Clarendon county prisoner, charged with larceoy of live etock Zeke White was the ring leader of the jail breakers, and, according to the statement of Tom Taylor, had been laying bis plans for escape for several days. On Friday last be told the other prisoners ibat if they would aid him they could all escape. Helmes and Hanks assented, but Taylor says ba told bim be preferred to stay in jail and stand trial again. Sunday morning Jailor Windham released the prisoners from the cage cells and allowed them the freedom of the corridor sorround I ing the cages. White and his accomplices first hung a blarkst out of the corridor window to con ceal them while at work ; then they opened the window casing and removed the sash weight, a bar of iron about two feet in length and weighing about seventy pounds. Using this weight as a crowbar they prized and knocked out the bricks jest below the window sill until a bole was made in the wail large enough for a mao to pass through. Crawling through this bole, which was con cealed on tee outside by a blanket, tbey dropped to the ground, a distance of only six or sevea feet. They then easily scaled the jail yard fence and made their etcape. An iron spoon that bad been carelessly left in tbs corridor some days before, was used as a screw driver, and with tbat the caeiug.was opened in order to get to the sash weights. Jailor Windham returned from church in time to see one of tbe negroes disappearing around tbs corner of tbe jail equare, but wan unable to stop bis flight. Taylor gave the alarm abont the time of Jailor Windham's return to the jail, bu: after the other prisoners bad made their escape. He claims that be was asleep and did not wake until the others bad escaped from the jail, bot that be gave tbe alarm ai soon as be discovered that they bad escaped. Deputy Sheriff Gaillard and jailer Wind ham set out in pursuit of the escaped prison era as soon as possible, but although they searched indefatigably all the afternon no trace of them could be foo nd. Deputy Sherill Gaillard says that he could not find out which direction they took and the attempt to capture them without bloodhounds was like searching for a needle in a haystack. The escaped criminals undoubtedly bad friends among the negroes, and have bad assistance in covering their flight and eluding capture. Sheriff Pierson will make every effort to recapture the three jail breakers, but with tfce lead they have already obtained the chances are in their favor. If the county had a pair of well-trained blood-bounds the capture of the jail breakers would have been aa easy matter, for the trail ws5 still bot wheo the escape was discovered. Dr. Bull's Cough Syrup is the best medi cine for sore throat, laryngitis, quinsy or tonsilitis. Every drop of it soothes and heals.
