Tbe Toomey Block bad a narrow escupe Thursday afternoon from being burned again, bat by quick work the fire department suc? ceeded in preventing ? serious fi;e. Ti^e fire started in the store occupied by tbe Sumter Cycle Co , and was caused by a valve ona gasoline brazer blowing off. The gasoline was blown all over the store and becoming ignited Instantly the place was ablaze in a momeot Mr. Gas Beall, the manager, was badly burned on one hand, and the stock of goods was almost totally destroyed One bicycle was badly damaged before it could be removed, and the tools ia. tb? repair shop were iriored by the intense beat. The lo?s of Mr.* Beall was about $40 ) to $500, with DO iosnrance. He had. just opened ?be pUce and had not received all of his stock, so had not placed an insurance policy on bis stock. The/boilding was damaged a hundred or two dfollars, by fire and water, but the own? ers escaped witb a saali loss owing, to tbe good work of the firemen. Attention is directed to the quarterly state j ment of tbe condition of tbe Bank of Sumter. It shows a heavy volume of business, and tbe deposit ?ccoant shows that the bank enjoys i tbe confidence of our people to large extent. County Treasurer Scarborough is getting everything in readiness to begin collecting taxes on the 16ta instant, and will be in his office on ard after ?hat date. A negro named Jackson was brought into ih?3Citj on the evening train Sunday io an unconscious condition and WHS left here for medical attention. He was injured by jump tog from the train near Wateree station. His bead and face were severely cut and bruised, and at first it was thought that his injuries were fatal, but next morning he regained con? sciousness.
