yfffiDtfuiSDAT, NOV. 6, 1895 WILLIAMS AND WOMEN. One of Them "Goes For" the Greenville Editor. Editor Register : As the editor of the Greenville News is a resident, for the time being, of your city, will you please allow me to ask a few questions of him through your paper ? He says: "It looks like common sense to me that the women of this State should be cou - sulted in a matter so vitally affecting their happiness and their position." Have yon, Mr. Williams, consulted them or bad a large petition from them when you undertake to say what they want or do not want? Have any of the women of South Carolina implored you not to allow the ballot to be ooked into their faces and fingers? As to their being 'incapable of knowing what they want or what is good for them," or "that they are such poor, weak, downtrodden, spiritless and op? pressed creatures, afraid to say what they think or feel, if there is any one who is trying more to impress that fact on them by intimations of ridicule, sarcasm, appeals to the evils that may befall them in case they obtain the ballot, trying to mould public opinion sc as to make the cause of equal rights for womeo unpopular and puttiog a ban on alt women who advocate it, you, Mr. Editor of the News, are the mao. lt seems "logical" to some of us wo? men that women themselves are (he best judges of what is for their good, and if the occasion arises wbeu we feel we need advice on the subject, why we would be pleased to select our couo sellor. You will admit, Mr Editor, we are capable of that much common sense, aod it is an act of common jus? tice to grant us that privilege. As for expecting "the defense, tbe protection, the elevation." and the courtesy of "chivalry" as you intimate we possess in lieu of the privileges of citizenship. I would say that privileges of citizen? ship or of any other sort cannot change the physical structure of woman, (which mal?es her possess less physical strength than man) or alter the fact that she will be always the mother of the human race ; and if these two considerations do not make men as thoughtful and as chivalrous toward women under any conditions, then they do not deserve to be called the "sous of women/' but the sons of brutes I I have so much faith in mankind that for one woman I am willing-nay, more, am anxious-to put the men to the test by having every privilege men enjoy. The paper is also informed that large detachments of Mohammedan insur? gents have combined and captured the town of Lanchau Fu, thc capital of the province of Kan Sn. defeating the Chi? nese, scattering them in all directions. It is asserted that it is the intention of the insurgents to form an ind?pen? dant kingdom in the territory they have Staken possession of. Numbers of secret societies in Central Cbioa have joined the insurgent Mohammedans. The Lamar correspondent of the Florence Times says : "There seems to be a movement on foot among those interested io the new county 'Calhoun7 to cut another 'slice' off Darlington by striking a straight line from the cross? ing of the C S & N railroad on Lynches river to where the Chesterfield and Darlington line crosses Black creek. By doing this they claim they will have the richest county in the State." Two Lives Saved. Oct. 30.-James Doyle shot and killed Albert Emmett at Buf? falo Bill's wild west show early this morning Both men were employed in the 'cooking department. They were friends, and messed together. Doyle escaped. There was no witness, and the motive for the shooting was un? known. The whole company turned out. to hunt for the fugitive, but neither the Sioux braves nor the county chain- j gang bloodhounds could follow his trail, and he has not been caotured Emmett was from Manchester, Vt., and Doyle is said to be from Maine. A Graceful Deed. While Wigg, who is a rather corpu? lent Mustee the color of coffee with cream, and apparently with a .trace of Indian blood, was speaking. Mr. Evans, of Marlboro a rampant Reform? er, noticed that the tumbler on the desk in front of the speaker bad been emp? tied. He stepped gently from his place and handed the tumbler to Mr Cooper, of Holleton, another red bot white supremacy and Ben Tillman man who took it to the table, filled it from the pitcher of water there and returned it i quietly so that Wigg might not be in- ? terrupted by thirst or be compelled to ! stop to call a page, it was a very i small incident, but ? thought it was j very graceful and an illustration of a \ spirit of magnanimity and good will J which I like to see, especially from the strong side to the weak.-4 B W , in \ Greenville News S NEWLY OPENED.
