WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 22,1894. Bill Arp on Intolerance. I got a batch of papers today, the organ of the American Protective Association-another party that some political schemers have gotten np to put down the Roman Catholics. I don't want any more Sectarian pre? judice. It makes me sick. New Eng? land fanaticism was no worse than the intolerance that possesses some of the members of Christian churches. I know Protestants who make them selves miserable for fear the Roman Catholics will take the country, and some of them are nearly as bitter against every other church, and would compass sea and land to make a proselyte. Contemptuous flings are made at other churches by those' who cal! themselves Christians. Some forty years ago when the elder Judg e Underwood joined the Episcopal Church a cynical Baptist friend ?aid : ;*W?l, judge, I understand you have joined the Episcopal Church. " "Yes,* said the judge. ' "Got into a church that won't, interfere with your politics or your, religion," said the Baptist* "?es," said the judge,'' and ^you - got into- a church where you thought the doctrine of election would save you, for you knew that nothing else would. It is well, my . friend, that that election was held before you were born for if it bad to be held over again you would never come in." I don't know anything un-Christfan in modern Romanism I don't be Heve in some of the dogmas, but this is a land and an age of religious liberty and thousands of good peo? ple are Roman Catholics. Parents are certainly conscientious in trying to do what they think is best for their children, and if a Roman Catholic father wishes his children taught in a school of that faith, it is his light and privilege. If he wishes to do bornage to the Virgin Mary, let him do it The Romish Church is the mother of all the churches. When it got corrupt,. and intolerant some oi ita adherents rebell?e} and formed new societies and they grew and prospered, and now their name is legion The old mother Church was shorn of her power and had to re? form her methods, and is no longer dictator of kingdoms. No man caa make me fear the. "secret insidious machinations," of the Romish Church . in this country while such men as Pat Walsh belong to it. I would trust Pat Walsh with every interest I have in good government and the religious liberty of my posterity. Yes. trust him far sooner than many of tiiebigot8 I know in Protestant churches. The Sisters of Charity took my mother when she was a friendless orphan in Savannah, when the terribie scourge had carried her parents to a single grave, and the panic-stricken people were fleeing the doomed city. They shielded her and cared for her when no one else would, and she loved them all her life. I never see them in the great cities moving so quietly along the streets with their dark gowns and modest hoods and kindly faces but what I think of their loving kindness to her who was all the world to me. We have one hundred and fifty beautifully bound hymu books in our church that were presented by a Northern lady. The book is the , standard "Laudes Domini'* by the Presbyterian Church, and its hymns are regarded as the best selection that bas ever been made, and yet many of the most beautiful hymus were com? posed by Roman Catholics. John Dryden the poet laureate of England, has hymus there aud he was a Roman Catholic, So was John Henry New? man, the cardinal who wrote that beautiful hym, "Lead, Kindly Light." F. W. Faber, who wrote, "There is a wideness in God's mercy." was a Catholic priest. Miss Adelaide Proctor another Roman Catholic, has hymns in this book. The whole compilation should teach us charity ! and tolerance While Watts and j the Wesley8 have much the largest j number of. of hymns, the Presby- j terian authors are very few. The j Episcopal authors are the most j numerous of all. The Unitarians are well represented, having such noble composers as William Cullen Bryant and Mrs. Adams, who wrote Nearer My God to Thee." Evans Alice and Phoebe Cary who were Uni* ersalists have hymns in there, and ao has Tom Moore, who was of no church. It is the repentant, grateful loving heart that gives praise in song and it does not matter to what church the author belongs if he sings in sincerity and truth. There are six million Roman Catholics in the United States and this count includes the children. There are ten million Prostestants, not counting children who have not made profession. Then, why should we fear them? Some of our over? zealous Protestants have sounded an alarm without provocation. I do not wish any more of their Duluth papers.-Bill Arp, in Sunny South ---i The most dangerous counterfeit of United States money discovered for years is announced from the treasury department to-day.
