o o j WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 8, 189^. Strife Among Reformers. Look as far back in the politicai history of the world as you please, and you will always find that a poli tical party cannot -stand intact and all-powerful, without internal dissen sions arising, unless there is some opposition party. The remarkable developments in South Carolina poli tics in the last two days prove that history always repeats itself. For within these two days the entire poli tical situation in South Carolina has been turned wrong side out, up side down, and Indeed, a great metamor phosis has come over the laud. Rings are going by the board and being smashed That big Ref?rm baud wagon has proven too small to carry the Alliancemen, as well as the Reformers, and many of those who have al way s been the red hottest Reformers are crawling down from their seals in the high vehicle. Just think of Samps Pope getting down and out. Samps has evidently seen that there are others who want to crowd him off his end of the driver's seat, and that the wagon is creaking and cracking. Yes, the old wagon has had too heavy a load to carry all along and now it has played out. The truth is the most significant events that have occurred in the past four years have happened io the last few days, and there is not a Reform politician who, today, will pretend to define exactly "where he is at," He simply doesn't know, and be does not know what is going to happen at any moment The political ring leaders of Re form evidently thought that the Alliance was going to quietly submit to being the tail of the big kite. 4 But the Alliancemen, before they went to Aiken, realized that they must fight for life. Consequently, they went there with "fight" in their minds, and they, have by their prompt and bold action, actually stunned many of the Reform leaders who are after office. Now many politicians have attempt ed to decry the strength of the Alli ance. A careful investigation shows that, while the Alliance has but 15, 000 active, members, the. controlling influence is great. The Alliance js composed of men who have influence over their fellows in their respecth e communities and there is hardly a member that - cannot control some one else's vote. Then no political machine can compete with the Alli ance. Its organization is perfect and secret, and the actiorf much quicker and more widespread, extending, directly to the far backwoods7 dis tricts. In the reports of th? Alliance pro ceedings from Aiken, mention of the fact that tbe Alliance, after passing its own resolutions with regard to the voting for candidates for tbe Legisla ture, proceeded, after a slight discus sion, to endorse those resolutious adopted previously by the Marion county Alliance along the same line. It is said, too, that while the Alii auce was in session at Aiken, a cen sus was made up of the standing of the members as to El I er be and Evans. The result was that on?y six of those in attendance, including officers, delegates and all, were found to be E vans men. Among them were the delegates from Spartanburg, Aiken and Laurens. The Eilerbe men are jubilant over the Alliance's action, and regard EUerbe's chances as much better than they have ever been. Now, as to the gubernatorial outlook, it has, indeed, been very much changed Pope's action in kicking oat of the traces came like a bomb, and shows that some of the strongest Reformers are tired of doing just what they are told to do. It is true that Tindal and Ellerbe have filed their pledges, but there is nothing to keep them from withdrawing them, if they see fit to follow Pope's lead leav- j ing E vans and convention all to him seif * j One thing is certain, any one can look at the action of the Alliance and see that the Tillman E vaus- Wilson combinatiou got severely rapped. Tiliman'e rap was direct, and that he felt it, be has shown by calling atten tion to it. Tbe rap to the Evans and Wilson crowd can be seen in the ac tion of the Alliance in bouncing Ganti and re-electing Duncan. Then there is all the dissatisfaction about the dispensary reopening matter. It is really surprising to hear what language some of those who, a few days ago, were heart, soul and body "Tillmanites," now use. One can hardly believe one's ears when be hears some of them talk. But its politics, and mighty changes are go ing on. Between this time and November there is certain to be plenty of fun, and disinterested parties can afford to enjoy it. There ie no doubt that it M going to be a direct battle between tbe Alliance on the one side and Tillman and his personal follow ing, with the coat tai i ewiagers, on tbe other. A mindreader could not foretell the result.?The State. Suicide in Anderson. AwHutsos, Augeft 2.?Mr. Charles ! M. Sberrad hanged himself to-day io an oat-boose at his home.
