SOUTH CAROLINA ANNUAL CONFERENCE Of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, will Meet in Sumter, Wednesday, Decem? ber 6-Notes of Interest-Del? egates and Homes Assigned Them. Tbe South Carolina Conference, Methodist Episcopal Church, South, will assemble in its one hundred and eighth session, in Sumter, S. C., Dec. 6, 1893. ' The board of missions, the presid? ing elders, and the committees of ex? aminations for admission in the trav? elling connection and for undergrad? uates of the first, second, third, and fourth years, will convene Tuesday, Dec. 5th. This conference is remarkable be? cause it is the fourth decennial confer? ence for Sumter. For the last forty years Sumter has had the honor and pleasure of entertaining the Confer? ence every tenth year. The conference first aseembled in Sumter in 1853. Bishop Wm. Capers presided and Kev. Paul A. M. Wil? liams was secretary. At that time the territory of the conference included a considerable part of western North Carolina. Within the bounds of this conference there were then. 33,054 white members, and 40,356 colored members, aggregating 73,410 mem? bers. It met here again in 1863 in the dark days of our late civil war. Bish? op Geo. F- Pearce presided and Kev. F. A. Mood was secretary. There were then 39,304 white members, and .42,466 colored members, aggregating 81,770 members. It met here again in 1873. Bishop H. N. McTyeire presid? ed and Bev. W. C. Power was secre? tary. The territory formerly within the State of North Carolina held by this conference had been ceded to the North Carolina Conference, which re- j duced the membership in this! conference about 11,000, and thou? sands more bad perisbd on the ?id field of battle, and in hospitals and prisons. The war was now over, and as a result it had reduced the colored membership about 49,000. So the miuutes of the conference of 1873 show only 36,550 white members and 648 colored members, aggregating 37,198. The conference met here again in 1883. Bishop A. W.. Wilson presidea and Bev. W. C. Power iras secretary. The minutes of this conf?rence show a white membership of 50,831, an in- ? crease of 24,281 white members in ten years. Dec 6th 1893 is the next decennial epoch for,the conference in Sumter, The minutes will probably show a white membership of about 76,000. Bishop B. K. Hargrove will preside. He was on the celebrated Cape May commission, which was. constituted by the Methodist Episcopal Church and the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, to settle the relative status of the two branches of Methodism in the United States and in the mission fields- He was elected and ordained Bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church South at the General Confer? ence that met in Nashville, Tenn., in 1882. At that time be was the hand? somest man of the new panel, and perhaps, with exception of Bishop Parker, elected and ordained at the same time, be was the best "all round'* ecclesiastic of that number. His age is' between 60 and 65 years. He is well preserved, vigorous in body and mind. He has the grip of a mas* ter. His suaviter in modo, for?ter in re are among the notable traits of his character, He is a clear reasoner, an i able administrative and executive officer, an instructive and impressive speaker. He succeded Bishop H. N. McTyeire as president ot the Board of ' Trustees of Vanderbilt University, i who was the father of that large an J ? flourishing institution. He is secre tary of the College of Bishops. The first Methodist church in this Vicinity was built over 100 years ago by i Bobt. Singleton and Richard Bradford.! It was situated about 30o yards beyond First Mill about one mile west or the ; city. The second was built by Thomp- ; son Glenn. Wm. L. Brunson was the ? first recorded class leader and stew? ard of that church. This second build- : ing was sold to the Boman Catholic j church. The third church was built j by Col. Geo. S. D. DesCharaps. This edifice was didicated by Bev. Hartwell i Spain. This was such an improve ment on all that went before, the ! eloquent preacher in the course of his I sermon called it "This beautiful tem- j pie or God." This edifice iu turn gave way to the brick structure that now j adorns the spot just in the rear or! where number three stood. This was j planned aud mostly built under the ! pastorate or Bev. H. F. Chreitzberg. '? Mr J. B. Carr was the reliable and i efficient master builder. The Sumterville church was includ- ' ed in the Sumterville circuit embrae- ! ing a large territory which was com-1 posed or ll local preachers. 2 travel- | mg preachers. 936 white members, 166 colored members, until the close of i the year or 1851, when ir was set off as ! a separate charge. Be v. A. M. Forster was appointed preacher-in-charge,(and ; Bev. S. W. Capers (the father of the ! wife of the present pastor) was pre- i siding elder. The charge then had 4 j local preachers, 151 whit* members. I This is the 42nd year or the existence of the Sumter station as a senarate charge, and during this period it has ; had 23 pastorates, averaging about 1.8 years to the pastorate. During ! these years the church was served bv A. M. Forster, F. A. Mood, W. H. Fleming, A. G. Stacey. J. A. Porter, ? B. P. Frauks (2 pastorates of 2 years and l year respectively), H. D. Moore, j I). J. Simmons (2 pastorates or 3 years ! and 1 vear respectively), Janies Stacy, i (who died May 1st 1868 during the 2nd : year or his pastorate), H. M. Mood, ? H. A. C. Walker. J. M. Carlisle, F. Auld, B. X. Wells, A. J. Stokes (2 pastorates or 3 years each), H. F. i Chreitzberg. M. Brown (whose health i failed at the beginning or his pasto-j rate), T. E. Wannamaker, J. M. Pike (whose health failed at begining of the 2nd year of his pastorate), and E. T. Hodges. Of these, H. T. Chreitz? berg alone has the distinction of serv? ing the charge 4 years consecutively, j and only Simmons, Carlisle, and Stokes, three years each consecutively. The charge is now about 400 strong and is thoroughly organized into boards and committees and the pas? tor thinks that while there is much room for improvement in individual cases the church has a sec of workers equal to the best he ever served with. There are three healthy missionary societies, a Dorcas society, committee on the poor, on the sick, and various (.ommittees on visitation and on atten? tion f? strangers and non-church-go? ers. There are two prayer meetings, a large .Sunday-school, and a useful Ep worth League. It is a specialty \> the pastor ,ia addition to his own siduous aud arduous labors, to susy lines of work for as many members the church as is practicable, and stimulate them to the most and best work possible. Though the p has not accomplished all that was signed for it, yet the measure or s cess attained fully justifies tue erToi The coming conference will m with one of the most prospere churches within its jurisdiction, ? Sumter, without regard todenoraii tional lines, most heartily welcon that body of noble men within its li its. The homes of ali creeds are op< ed to them with an unstinted hos talky. This session of conference will the largest body of Methodists tl has ever assembled in South Carol ii The usual reduced rates will be g en over all the railroads to persons tending the conference. The classes for admission and fi and second years will meet in the M. C. A. rooms. The classes of third and four years will meet in the lodge room Masonic Temple. The regular session of con fe re n will convene Wednesday morning 9.30, December 6, which will be pi ceded by the administration of t sacrament of the Lord's supper. Kev. H. F.Chreitzoerghas been s? retary of the conference, but he w this year transferred to the Nor Carolina Conference, so Rev. -E. Watson, assistant secretary, will a the TQU. The election of an editor of tl Southern Christian Advocate will of much interest. Bev. W. D. Kir land now holds that position. Cleric and lay delegates to the General Co ference will also be elected. Following are the homes to whi< the delegates have been assigned, ai the names of the delegates : Anderson, W. J.-D. Z.
