The flourishing seaport tow?. of Santander, io which the teasels if every country usually ride at anchor, bas been so seriously damaged. that it will not recover in years, A Spanish vessel which was discharg? ing its cargo io port had on board 500 cases of dynamite and a qa ant ty of i rob ore. Only twenty cases of the dynamite appeared on the ship's mani fest, the 480 cases being contraband. The vessel caught on fire, .and in re? moving the dynamite only the twenty cases were taken ont, it not being known that the other cases were there. The vessel was then towed ont into the bay, and crowds fined the quay to watch the bnrniog steamer. Soddenly there was an explosion which ?boob the very beavens, followed by a rain iron and timbers -No! only the crews of the Teasel, but hundreds, of spectators on the shore were titled, and their mangled rem ai s s Scattered everywhere. Many were thrown into the water by the concession and drowned. The neighboring build? ings then caught fire and added to the horror .of the scene. The full extent of the fatalities is not yet known, bat it will be heavy, and hundreds have been driven mad by the calamity. The country is justly indignant at the^Bnippers of the contraband dynamite, and feeling bis running high. It bas been a terrible illustration of the advisability of pursuing au honest policy, bat s life-time of repentance- .on the part of . the transgressor? cannot bring one victim of the disaster back to life.
