Gov. Chamberlain on the
South Carolina Railway.
NEW York, Oct. 9.-Ex-Governor
Daniel H. Chamberlain, iu an interview
with a Press News reporter in the forc?
er's law office, expressed himself freely
and candidly this afternoon iu regard to
the present condition and future pros?
pects of the Sou'h Carolina railway.
The trouble with that road is the old
story; defaulting of interest on irs
hoods, inability to meet obligations,
followed by the inevitable consrqneo.ee
of an attempt to relieve the difficulty by
re-organization, the failure iu which
results in legal proceedings and the
appointment of a receiver. Ex Gover?
nor Chamberlain is the receiver, and
."presents the situation in his own langu?
age as follows :
*4The South Carolina raliway made a
default ia the payment of inn-rest on its
first mortgage bonds last April, and in
Coober of the present year; also on
the interest of the secoud mo-tgage
ia. January and July of the present
year. Th's-made it plain to the holdets
o?ts securities that the present admin?
istration of the road w<?uld not bi able
to-manage its affairs with financial
success, and f >r the past six months
the bondholders have been considering
the necessity of bringing suit to fore?
close either the first or second mort
gage?, which would involve the ap
- poiDtment of a receiver.
"Duriug the past summer a plan was
alto contemplated with a view to re
organizing the road so as to avoid thc
necessity of a foreclosure, bu* after
careful consideration, it was found that j
this could not be carried io to effect j
without sacrificing a part of the invest- j
' meot of the first mortgage bondholders, j
and the plan was abandoned. It was ?
theo determined to place the road in i
the hands of tbe courts as the most ]
available method of protecting the in- j
Crests of the parties.
The present suit was brought by j
holders ci second mortgage bouds, but
-as I BQQCfstand, it has the approval of
: a large number of bolder? of first mort?
gage bonds.
' "As to my own purposes and views,
. I will say that it will be my duty as re
6 cerver to use every effort to make the j
; road earn as much as possible, and to 1
protect the interests of al! its creditors; \
aad the best way to accomplish this is
to exercise al; possible energy to pro- j
cure new business for the road and close j
eeonomy in expending the receipts.
^-"1-had the opinion that the road,
should be managed so as to yield the i
best possible benefit to people living in '
the section JOJL country through which
it passes. This is equally for the nene- j
fiTWIffce people of South Carolina as
'for the creditors, wherever they live, j
I have no other plans or wishes in con?
fection with the road other than to
I .ta 1611 the trust imposed upou me o
?the best advaotage of ali parties in?
terested.
.*I feel confident that the road, by
careful management and the practice of
strict economy, can be made to pay full
interest on its first mortage bonds and
-le**?~over a surplus besides ; bot as to
the latter-item, of course I can't ven?
tare to make any positi-se statement "
If the road should finally be sold, it
ii &? opinion of Gove nor Chamberlain
that the sale will not take place within
?weWe months. The earnest manner
of the Governor and his perfect
wH?regot.s that the South Carolina peo?
ple,-and every one interested in the
affairs of the road, should be made tully
acquainted with the present condition
ad well as what was contemplated as to
itnre management, and his dis?
claimer as to any personal plans or
schemes of his own in the matter, leave
no room to doubt that his convictions
are sincere, and that the present un
fortunate condition will call forth every
effort to replace the wrecked road upon
a sound financial footing.

OT merchants, our town has had many
Of fortune, of fame and renown,
But never a combination
Made up of a Brown and a Brown.
The aforementioned rare combination lias brought together ;
a stock of pure, fresh and popular goods, staple and substantial,
good to eat and crood to wear-all of which goods are enhanced ;
! in value by the men who are putting them before the public, I
for it gives us pleasure to say
i
The fam'ly of Brown reaches backwards,
And is kin to the kings cf old *ime ;
But the climax of fame is accompli>lied
In this year of our Lord, eighty-nine.
The climax referred to is the low price at which our goods I
are being sold. In SHOES we are running a line of specialties, ;
and the open-eyed amazement that smites our customers as they
behold our lay-out. is equal to a seventy-iive cent show.
And further. j
We stand it. the end of the ages,
[ A Brown by the side cf a Brown,
And declare to the town and the country,
WVer not seeking gold, but renown
To enable us to lay a foundation for the said fame and re
jDown, we have put down a solid substratum of low prices and
formed new purposes of honesty and uprightness in the hand?
ling of FLOUR, BACON, SUGAR, COFFEE, and GROCERIES of all
kinds.
In the line of DRY GOOPS, we have displayed our best
taste and are prepared to knock out all competitors in four
rounds of four minutes each. We are cosmopolitan in principle
and philanthropic at heart, with a strong leaning towards the
I doctrine of man's universal brotherhood. We believe in the
Alliance, in Free Trade, und Protective Tariff, and in Tariff for
Revenue only. We accept all the creeds and isms of our cus?
tomers and we believe heartily in the nebular hypothesis, and
meanwhile endeavor to keep our stock full in every depart
