WEDNESDAY; iNOVEMBEB 30. WINE VISION. JUSTIN MC'CARTHY. "While the House of Hope is builded oa the weak and shifting sand, While our breath is as the wind is, take the flagon in your band ; For wj&le^Was quaffing, laughing ia the tav? ern yesternight, From the ?aknown world an angel floated on ?toy swimming sight, Handed me a golden vessel, bade me drink, and as I draak All my swooning senses strait way ia the pool of slumber sank ; And I dreamed a dream enchanted of a land beyond the sky, - Where no*youthful cheek 'grows pales, where no flagon e'er runs dry, Where no woman whispers falsely, where DO loving hearts forget. Then I woke and wept at waiting, leaving in jibat pleasant laud Fairer^owers tic&n Mossellay has, bluer domes than Sanaa rcand. NeverT?bre, iinnappy Hafiz, will jon tread *bai pleasant land, Though you suck the seven oceans from their cap of golden sand. History and Aires of the Na? tional Woman's Christian Temperance Union. This organization, with Us thirty eight auxiliary State, and nine Territorial Unions* beside that of the District of Columbia, is the largest so? ciety ever. composed exclusively of women, and conducted entirely by - them, it has been organized in every State and Territory of the na? tion, and locally inabout 10,000 towns and cities. Great Britain, Canada and ^Australia have also organized. As a general estimate, we think the number of local Unions in the United States about 10,000, including Young Women's Christian Temperance Unions, with a following of about 200,000, besides numerous juvenile organizations. T?.is society is the lineal descendant of the great Tem? perance Crusade of 1873-4, and is a union of Christian wemen for educa? ting the young; forming a-better public sentiment ; reforming the drinking classes ; transforming by the poweX qf Divine Grace those who are . enslaved by alcohol ; and for securing the entire abolition of the liquor trafSc. Its work is well known, being uon sectional, non-sectarian, and com? prised under the general divisions of Preventive, Educational, Evangelistic, Social and Legal work, besides the Department of Organization. Its auxiliarles have been, confessedly, the*chief factors in State campaigns j for local option, statutory prohibition and constitutional amendment It began the movement for Scientific Temperance education in the public schools, having been instrumental in securing laws to that end in seven? teen of the States, besides the only temperance legislation ever won from Congress, by which ali the Territories and the District of Columbia are bronght under the same beneficent j statutes, and nearly one-half the chil? dren of America who are of school age, are to be regularly taught the effects of alcoholics and other nar? cotics upon the human system. The National W. C. T. U. has united ^Northern and Southern women in a -common work for God and Home and Native Lind, thus sweeping away the alienation of years, and replacing 5t by sisterly affection, tender and de? voted. It has founded a publishing house and a temperance paper (27ic? Union Signal,) which are to day exercising an influence exceeded by no similar agency iii the nation.- About 50.000, 000 pages were printed by the Wo? man's Temperance Publication Asso? ciation last year. The National Departments of He? redity and Hygiene, which strike at the very root of the alcohol delusion, are of great practical usefulness in j the homes of the people. The work j of-the^W. C T. U. among the chil dren in the Sunday Schools, Loyal Temperance Legions and Kindergar? tens; its efforts, to influence college students and to train and organize yoong women for a philanthropic life; its Evangelistic Woi.k for the non church-going class, for railroad em ployees, soldiers, sailors, lumbermen, | miners-especially for the drinking j men of ali classes-ali these have} proved the breadth of its comprehen- j sion and the tirelessness of its zeal. ! "We must eat or we cannot live. This we all know. But do we all know that we die by eating ? It is said we dig our graves with our teeth. Hov/ foolish this sounds. Yet it is fearfully true. "We are ter? rified at the approach of the cholera and yellow fever, yet there is a dis? ease constantly at our doors and in our houses far more dangerous and destructive. Most people have in their own stomachs a poison, more slow, but quite as fatal as the germs of those maladies which sweep men into eternity by thousands without warning in the times of great epi? demics. But it is a mercy that, if we are watchful, we can tell when we are threatened. The following are among the symptoms, yet they do not always necessarily appear in the same order, nor are they always the same in different cases. There is st, dull and sleepy feeling; a bad taste in the mouth, especially in the morning; the appetite is. change? able, sometimes poor and again it seems as though the patient could not eat enough, and occasionally no appetite at all ; dullness and slug? gishness of the mind; no ambition to study cr work; more or less head? ache and heaviness in the head; dizziness on rising to. the -feet or moving suddenly ; furred and coat? ed tongue : a sense of a load on the stomacn that nothing removes ; hot and dry skin at times ; yellow tinge in the eyes; scanty and high-colored urine ; sour taste in the mouth, fre? quently attended by palpitation of the heart; impaired vision, with spots that seem to be swimming in the ah* before the eyes ; a cough, with a greenish-colored expecto? ration; poor nights'rest; a sticky slime about the teeth and gums; hands and feet cold and clammy; irritable teraoer and bowels bound up and costive. This disease - has puzzled the physicians and still puz? zles them. Ii is the commonest of ailments and yet the most compli? cated and mysterious. Sometimes it is treated as consumption, some? times as liver complaint, and then again as malaria and even heart dis? ease. But its real nature is that of constipation anddyspepsia. It arises . in the digestive organs and soon affects all the others through the corrupted and poisoned blood. Often the whole body-including the nervous system-is literally starved, even when there is no emaciation to tell the* sad story. Experience Las shown that there is put one remedy that can certainly cure this disease in all its stages, namely, Shailer Extract of Roots or Mother SeigeKs Curative Syrup. It never fails but, ns-v.. "theless, no time should be lost in briner other so- | called remedies, for they will do no i good. The Neus and Courier, correspondent of Sum? ter answers that question in his communica? tion of the 14tb, when he says the farmers sell the cotton to the merchants with the under? standing that a part if not the whole value of the cotton is to be traded out with the buyer, and if this contract is carried out in good faith, the merchant mnst charge an additional profit to that which he would sell for. cash to cover the probable loss on the cotton, kc.
