It might have been more ^i^rodent to stay until morning, but J^?felt anxious to get back and eager to @?near Dolly's praises about her doll. - ; I was mounted on a steady-going Si^-^fd horse and pretty well loaded. IN^ ?f igbl set in before was a mile from ^-i&wn, and settled down as dark as f&j-f?tch while 1 was in the midd?e of ??-?ihe darkest bit of road I know of. I 0rf?onld have felt mv wav, though, I re ^ j?embered it so well ; snd when the etorm that bad been brewing broke ii?- and pelted the rain in torrents, I w?s ;? five miles or maybe six miles from .^bome. I rode as fast as ? cottld, but all of % | a sadden ~I heard a little cry like a child's voice. I stopped short and Vl?steued. I heard it agin. I called and it answered me. - I couldn't see - !a thing;, all was as dark as pitch. I % got down and felt around in the grass ;%,;r?called again, and again was an ^ewered. Then I began to wonder. - ~Tm noi timid, but I was known to be | a drover, and to hs~e money about i me. it might be a trap to catch ; me Unawares and rob and murder me. I am not superstitious, not very, but bow could a real child be out on the prairie in such a night, at such an - hour I might be more than human. The bit of a coward that hide3 itself ? most men showed itself to me then, but once more I heard the cry, and said I : "It any man's child is hereabouts, Anthony liant is not the man to let It die." I searched again At last I be .thought me of a hollow under the Bill, and groped that way. Sure enough, I found r< little dripping thing that moaned and sobbed as I took it in my arms. I called my horse and the beast came to me, and 3 mounted and tucked the little soaked thing under my ec?t as weil a3 1 could, promising to take it home to mamma. It seemed so tired, and pretty soon cried itself to sleep on my bosom. It had slept there over an hour when I saw my own wiodows There j were lights in them, and I supposed | my wife bad lit them for my sake, but when I got into the doorway I saw something wa? the matter, and stood still with a dread fear of heart five minutes before I could lift the latch. ' At last I did it, and saw the room full of neighbors and my wife amid them weeping. When she saw me she hid her face. "Oh, don't tell him,7' she cried, "it will kill him." "What isit?" I cried. "Nothing now, I hope. What's that you have in your arms ?" "A poor lost child," said I ; "I'| found it on the road. Take it, will j you? I've turned faint." And I j lifted the sleeping thing and saw the j face of my own child, my Dolly. It was my own darling and none ! other that I had picked up on Che | drenched road. My little child had j wandered on^ to meet papa and the! the doll while the mother was at j work, and they were lamenting her as one dead. I thanked heaven on my .knees before them. It is not much of a story neigh-1 bore, but I think of it often in the j niffhts and wonder how I conld boar i to live now if I had not stopped when ; I heard the cry fo>- help noon the j road, -hardly louder than a squirrel's j chirp. That's Dolly yonder with her ? mother in the meadow?a girl worth i saving, I think ; but, then, Vm her j father and partial, maybe ; the pr?t-1 tiest and sweetest thing this side of? the Mississippi.?S?. Louis Gbbe- j Democrat. Dr. Williams on the Pastorate. The Rev. Dr. Williams, pastor of the Pirst Baptist church io Baltimore, has given to bis?cck, and they to the world, his reminiscences of his labor-of knowl edge, love and authority among them for thirty-three years?to he thirty-four years on January 1st, 1885 While of course Dr. Williams is a decided Bap tist?holding that an injunction to bap tise believers is one to baptise none but believers?he has a large and catholic heart for all who aim to know and teach the truth. Bis example is worthy of imitation by ali young pastors and preachers and his success will strength en their hearts. I subjoin for the read ers of the North Carolina- Presbyterian a passage or two, as showing the nght way of shaking the torch of Truth : "Another thing worthy of attention as contributing to the success of tuy long pastorate and to the prosperity of the church, is that it has been my. highest ambition to preach the Gospel in its purity and -simplicity. I have aimed to give myself wholly to the work of the ministry. I have never, in all these years, preached on sensation thea;os, or advertised them to draw congregations. When a minister begins to publish sen sational subjects, he must keep them up or the people will conclude that he has nothing worth hearing, and will not attend upon his ministry. I came to Bultimore to stay, and 1 knew full well that the Gospol would always be new, that the people will always need it-and never tire of -it. I am grateful that l never aspired to be anything else than a preacher of the Gospel and a pastor of of the people."' And so it has come to ! pass that the roll of his church, which io 1S51 had 273 members, has now 492; 1.501 having been admitted by Dr. Williams to the fellowship of the church in his long and arduous pasto rate. *If ? could have the ear of all minis ters, especially young ministers, I would, .say to them, pay especial attention to the children. Keop in contact with them. Let them feel that you love them, that you are their friend snd pas tor. Aim to bring them to Jesus, and train them for Jesus. Taking 1.000 of them whom I have baptised into the fel lowship of this church, I find that 415 were between 15 and 25 years of age, 247 under 15, 223 bei ween 25 and 35. 102 between 35 and 45, 9 between 45 and 55, and 4 between 55 . and 65. Those brought in early have been the most prompt in their church duties and given us least trouble. *The question has often been asked noe. 'What is "the secret of long pas torates?1 As far as we are concerned, the question is answered in these re miniscences. -Education in the truth, as we understand it*; the cultivation of the missionary spirit; frequent exercise of the grace of giving ; special attention to children, expecting and encouraging early conversion, not depending upon evangelists or foreign aid of any kind in special efforts; unity of purpose on the part of-the pastor aiming to be nothing but a preacher of the Gospel?determi nation not to run from work or dificul ties, or to be allured by tempting calls? never advertising sensational themes to draw audiences. If you press ine for a shorter answer, here it is : The grace Gftd, common-sense and a pious, sensi ble. prudent ici fe. Neither of these can be dispensed with, and a minister hope to remaiu long or be much blessed. But my brethren, after all that may be said upon the secret of a long pastorafe, the one great essential is the presence and influence of the IJoJy Spirit in the hearts of the people and with the pastor in his study, in his visits, and in the pulpit."?Ar- C. Presbyterian Broken Hearted Father. An affecting scene, one of the sad dest, occurred lately at the visiting window of the jail in one of our cities. A bey about eighteen years old was incarcerated, awaiting transportation to Danemora prison, where he is to serve a six years' sentence. The prisoner was a fine looking fellow. His father, an aged minister, had come to visit him. The son stood with shamed face on one side of the grating and the grief stricken father on the other. Drink had been the cause of the boy's troubles. The father pleaded earnestly with his child to reform while in prison, to read his Bible and improve all spare time in study. 'Son,' eontinued the father, *if you had the grace of God in your heart you wouldn't be here. Tf those cursed grog shops were swept away I'd have been spared all this. Let it be a lesson to you, boy. This is the last time you will probably ever ?ee me. I am old and probably won't live your six years' out. Oh, my boy, promise me to give yourself to God. that I may see you over yonder.' The boy promised and the old njan went his way. While this father returns to his home to go down to a premature grave in sor row, the man who ruined his son is now engaged in ruiuing other sons. Which shall we have, *The Home or the Sa loon V it is within the ? of the people to answer this question.?Domes tic Journal. TESTIFIES.
