The -well-being of society rests on homes, and what are their foundations but womals care and devotion : A I good mother is worth an army of ac : quain tan ces, and a true-hearted, noble minded sister is more precious than the ^v *dear five hundred friends.' The love we experience for domestic blessings increases^ faith in an infinite goodness, and ls a foretaste of a better world to S come. Good citiz?tfs disagree as to the poli ??fe *J of prohibiting the manufacture and ? - sile ol ardent spirits as a beverage. : But all thoughtful mea unite in the belief that we have the right and the if:^ duty to prevent, as far as possible, the ???r adulteration of articles intended for : j? food. If the use of a harmless >ubsti ? tote, as chicory in ground coffee, flour ia candy, &c, is properly punishable as a fra?d, as we all admit, .surely the introduction bf a dangerous poison into V an article of food cr drink ought to sub? ject its perpetrator to a severer pun? ishment. Now it is notorious that virulent gp poisons are largely used in the aduher I ation of ardent spirits. Indeed, for a - few dollars, a dealer can procure a volume giving formulas for thc pre? paration of every kind of liquor, with hardly a trace of pure spirit in any one of them. Incalculable as are :bc evils of the intemperate use of ardent spirits at best, these evils are immeasurably in? tensified and multiplied by the impu? rity of the stuff ofteu sold as such. Can these extra evils be abolished ? Can they be diminished ? We believe they can be very greatly [ diminished ; and urgently invite the attention of our law-makers to the sim? ple plan we here propose : Give us a State Inspector of Wines and Spirituous aod Malt Liquors. Let him be appointed by the Governor, or elected by the Legislature. Give him stub a salary as will command the. highest skill and the best character. Make it his duty to ^isit from time to time ail licensed drinking saloons and ali wholesale liquor houses in the State, to obtain average samples of their liquors held for sale, to subject these liquors to thorough and careful analy? sis, and report for prosecution and punishment all dealers whom he shall find to be ofTering impure liquors for sale. Let severe penalties be impeded Opon all such offenders. We believe that the public sentiment would warmly approve the immediate enactment of well digested law to carry out the above suggestions. Sure? ly every patron of the bar-rooms would be glad to have every possible protection against the dangerous adul? teration of what bc thicks essential to tis welfare.- Thc No lad. Wine and Women. Of the worst foes that women ever bad to contend with wiue stands at the head. The appetite for strong drink in men has spoiled the lives of more good women-ruined more hopes for them, scattered more fortunes for them, * brought to them more sorrow, shamo and hardship-than any other evil that exists. There arc tens of thousands of widows who to-day sit in utter despair, because their husbands bave neon slain by strong drink. ?Yes,'says the Agricultural World, "tbere are hundreds of homes scattered all over the land in which women live lives of torture ; going through all ?banges of suffering that ile between the extreme of fear and ^despair, because those whom they love, love wine better than the women they have sworn to love sud protect. There arc women by the thousands who dread to hear at tue door the step that once-thrilled them with pleasure; that step has learned to reel ^^?B^M^l wa?et the inSuence of the seductive poison. There arc women groaning with pain, while we write these words, from bruises and brutali? ties inflicted by husbands made mad by drink. There can be no exaggeration in any statement made in regard to this matter, because no human imagination can create anything worse than the truth, and no pen is capable of portray? ing the truth. The sorrows of a wife with a drunken husband or a mother with a drunken son, are beyond all doubt as near the realization of bell as can be reached ! j The shame, the indignation, the sorrow, the sense of disgrace for herself aud children, the poverty and beggary, the fear and the fact of violence, the linger? ing, life-long struggle and despair of countless women and drunken husbands, all these are enough to make all women curse wine and engage unitedly in op? posing it everywhere as the worst enemy of their sex. Self-Confidence. The trouble with Peter wes his self confidence. That is the trouble with a good many of us. We have more self confidence than we are warranted in having. Peter said, if all the others deserted Christ he wouldn't. Many men to-day are trying to reform them? selves. They depend on their own strength and faith. The strongest men in the Bible failed in their strongest point. Abraham was the man of faith, yet in Egypt he deuied his wife because be didn't trust God. Moses was noted for his humility, yet he lost Canaan by losing his terooer. Elijah was a brave roan, yet he failed through cowardice. The beloved disciple proposed to call down fire to destroy certain persons ; and Peter, the most ardent of the disci? ples, cursed and denied Christ. 'Let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.' Satan aims high. When he wanted a man to betray Christ he took-Judas, the treasurer of the disci? ples, and when he wanted a mac to deny Christ he took Peter, the leader of the disciples, and the highest ecclesiastical authority of the day. Let us take warnie sr. ! The New York World opposes a great parade on the oceasion of Cleve? land's inauguration, and we think it is right. Simplicity and frugality are Democratic principles and ought spec? ially to be adhered to now when the country bas been led away from them by Eepublican extravagance and osten? tation. Furthermore, we oppose any? thing likely to attract a great crowd of people, and particularly Southern peo? ple, to Washington. If some method could be devised to keep Southern men away from the Capitol altogether for the next four years we would favor it hear tily. A New York man has asked for a di? vorce because a moustache is sprouting on his wife's lip. As a role, it makes a man mad to have any mustache on his wife's lips but his own.
