Some resort to : Hydrate of Chloral and other drugs to ^ l^rodttce sleep. Such drugs, if their %i sae if once begun .have to be continued, fe ?od in increasing doses, and every If eflbrt should he made to.induce sleep in some other way. Among the methods that have been suggested, is the stop? ping of all study or serious reading, half an hour before bed-time, and to take sufficient exercise with dumb-bells or Indian clubs to produce a warm glow of the body, and then jump into bed. Io winter, sleep ?aa flannel night-gown, and between blankets instead of cold sheets. The attempt, when in bed, to read some amusing novel may be made, in order to divert the mind from the wakefulness. A second method is, in? stead of reading, to repeat a poem with which-one is familiar. Another plan is, to draw in a long, slow breath by the mouth, and force the breath out through the nose, imagining that thc twa currents can be distinctly seen. The mind is to be kept fixed upon thc operation of breathing, and the endeav? or to see the currents as they are ex? pelled. One of our editorial associates finds relief by wetting a cloth with cold water and placing across the forehead, and binding it in place by mean3 of a towel. It is worth while to give either of these methods a thorough trial rather than to resort to drugs of any kind. American Agriculturist for November. Norway. Norway impresses one as a country that has just been discovered instead of as a land of such ripe civilization that its sons were able to discover America half a century before Columbus. Mon nments, castles, ruins, buildings, hoary or memorable it has none. Sweden seems much more ancient. Norway ap? pears to yield nothing but mountains, valleys and fjords, the latter as narrow aa the valleys and as deep as the moun? tains are high. The people seem so content with the monntains, valleys and fjords that they press no further claim on a country so lavish in these. The land is very thinly settled and scarcely cultivated at all ; farming has a very limited signification, ann the farmhouses are tar from idyllic. They have no well Stocked barn, larder, or what people with our ideas would call a dairy. The milk often has a cfueer taste, tl c butter : if bad and the cheese is worse. The j pretty and frightfully dirty children are to he pitied, having no pantry to go to with cookies and gingersnaps and pies The poorest farmer in the United States can bare cabbages and turnips and pumpkins and corn ; here, the comparatively well to do country? man mast content himself with flat bread, milk and the abominable cheese, fish and thc poorest kind of meat. This is not the fault o? the soil, however. It is because thc Norwegian peasant rather despises vegetables from his scant knowledge of them. If ten kinds of vegetables, including asparagus and seven kinds of barries will grow iu Tromso, at nearly 69 degrees North lati? tude, this is proof evident that they would grow further South, if the natives would but make the attempt to culti? vate them. I devoutly wish that a few skilful Americans would come here and do missionary work by planting large gardens and rubing vegetables and fruit for the market and to provide for the hotels. A supply of the best American garden seeds would be an inestimable blessing and a colony of Miss Parloas and Marion Earlands would win thc benedictions and thanks of the whole grateful world of tourists, if they would teach in Norway thc art most needed and which only a tour Norway, under present circumstances will lead one to appreciate properly.-Boston Transcript Correspondence. ma i I I i 1? - 'Hasten the time when thc world shall be evangelized.' Thus men pray ; but many do nothing to help on the good work. The$ fold their, arms in apparent indifference, seeming to think the Lord will by a miracle convert the world. It is related of an old negro woman in a congregation that she sang at the top of her voice, 'Fly abroad, thou mighty gospel,* but failed to see the contribution basket. Thc collector said to her, 'Put something in here to help the gospel fly.' The reader can make thc application. Instead of a few mea in a nation declaring war, let the question be sub? mitted to a vote Gf thc people. If a majority vote in favor of war, let only ? those who so vote do the fighting. There would be, we judge, but little blood shed. This plan is worth a trial emir men will open their eyes to the sinfulness of shedding human blood. LANDS FOR SALE. A HOME DRUGGIST TESTIFIES. Popularity at" homo is not always the best test pf merit, bat we point proudly to the fact that no other medicine has won for itself such universal approbation in its own city, state, and country, and among all people, as Ayer's Sarsaparilla. The following letter from one of our best known Massachusetts druggists should be of interest to every sufferer: IIHfoUitlHietH?fs Rheumatism, so se? vere that I could not moro from the bed, or dress, without help. I tried several reme? dies without much if any relief, until I took AYER'S SARSAPARILLA , by the uso of two bottles of which I was completely cured. Have sold large quantities of your SARSA? PARILLA., and it still retains its wonderful popularity. Tho many notable cures it has effected in this vicinity convince me that it is tne bast blood medicine ever offered to the pubiic. E. F.
