It was written lats iu the fall of 1862, and the next spring wu? sent Jo Arthur's Home Magazine, Philadelphia, appearing therein iu the number for July, ^S63. One E. Bulmcr, of Illinois, copied it, signed his own name "to it, and seut (as his Own) to the Farmer's Advocate, Chicago. The editor of some Wisconsin paper (whose . name I have forgotten, if ever I knew) clip? ped it from tne Farmer's Ach?cate for his own columns: but supposing there was a misprint in the signature, changed the'm' therein to *w,' and- thus the name of 'Bulwer' became attached to the poem. An immense acces? sion of popularity Immediately followed. Copies of papers containing it-credited to Bulwer.-have been sent me from nearly every i State in the Union, and irom Eogland, Scot? land, and Ireland ;. it is to be found in ortho? dox and spiritual hymn and song books, iu . at least one school reader in wide use, and in a score of bound volumes and selections; it bas been quoted from in speeches in the Leg? islature of several States, and several times in the Congress of the United Suites. On thc la3t of January, 1880, ? had the pleasure of Bitting in the Stranger's Gallery of the House of Representatives} in Washington, D. C., and bearing the Hon. Mr. CoflVotb, member of Congress from Pennsylvania, in his oration on the death of Hon. Rush Clark, member of Congress from Iowa, quote a portion of this poem, which thus became embalmed (credited to Bulwer, as asnal,) In the Congressional Re* cord (see 46th Cong., 2d Sess., Part I, p. 638.) A short, stout, ruddy-faced man, who was standing near by, turned at this and answered for the boat's offi? cer: "Yes, madam/' he said, "this is the boat . " She looked np at the speaker, a stranger, and was about to thank him, when he added, "I am going to thc end of the route, and 1 will see that the children are safe. The lady looked up at him so searchingly, and possibly so suspi? ciously, that he flushed up for a mo merit ami said, I'll take good care of them if you'll trust them to mc. I am General Grant." "So you are !" exclaimed the lady, as she recognized thc face which painting and photography have made so familiar for the last twenty years. See gladly placed the girls in such distinguished care, and was equally grateful and amused to sec thc Gen? eral and his little charges in conver? sation on the deck of the boat as it moved off.-N. An exchange truthfully puts thc matter thus:-"It is an experience of publishers that too many people arc apt to think it matters but little whether thc newspaper bill is paid promptly or not, that it ia a small sum and is of but little consequence. This is not because subscribers arc unwilling to pay, but because they are negligent. Each one imagines because his year's indebtedness amounts to so small a sum, thc pub? lishers car.uot be much in want of it, without for a moment thinking that thc income of a newspaper is made of just each small amounts, and that the aggregate of all subscriptions is by no means an inconsiderable sum of money." -? ? --~~ Rev. Dr. John A. Broadus, whilst attempting to preach in New York last Sunday, fainted and had to be taken to hie place of sojourn. 1 A Brave kittle Daughter. There is ? very pretty story by Miss Strickland, in lier "Queens of En gland,*' of a little girl who sated her father's life. lt was in the time of Queen Anne, and Lord Preston, ike father of the child, was condemned to death for conspiring to bring back the exiled King James to the throne. Her name was Lady Catherine Graham, ami she was only nine years uld. The poor child was, during the trial of ker father, left itt the Queen's apartments, in Windsor Castle. The day after the condemnation of Lord Preston, the Queen found little Lady Cather? ine iii St. George's gallery, gazing earnestly on the whole length picture of James II., which still remains there. Struck with the mournful expression on the young girl's face, Anne asked her hastily what she saw in that picture which made her look on it so particularly. "I was thinking," said Ike inno? cent child, "how hard it is that my father must die for loving yours." The Queen, pricked in conscience by this artless reply, immediately sat down and signed the pardon of .Lord Preston.-Selected. Some Queer Ants. "What would you think to sec an ant carrying a parasol ?" said Uncle Fred. "Ok, uncle !" cried Joknny and Puss at Ike Barrie time. "You know an ant could not carry a parasol," added Puss. Their uncle had just come honie from a trip to ike West Indies and South America. He had a great many wonderful stories to tell them about the queer sights he had seen and the strange places wkcrc ke kad been. But tkey thought he must be joking with them now, for they could not believe that au ant could do such a thing. "Well said Uncle Fred, "their parasols were not made of silk stretched over a wire frame. They were only pieces of leaves from trees and the ants held them in their mouths in suck a way that tkey covered tkeir bodies entirely. Yon could not see ike ants at all, so ike leaves looked as if tkey were marcking along of their own accord. Tke first time I saw any was in tke West Judies. One day, wken I was riding willi a friend out to his plantation, a great swarm of these ants crossed our road. We watched tkem a long time. It was a queer sigkt, 1 assure you. Tkey did not travel very fast. There must have been thousands and thous? ands of them, for we could not see cither end of the column." "Where were they going I won? der," said Johnny. "They were carrying thc leaves to Iheir nests. They do not eat tke leaves, but tkey are very fond of a fungus which grows on them after they have been a little while in their xv derground nests.
