It breaks the fond father's heart, bereaves the loving mother, extinguishes natural affections, - erases eonjujal love, blois out filial at? tachments, blights parental hope, and brings down mourning age in sorrow to the grave. It produces weakness, not Strength ; sickness, not health ; death not life. It makes wives widows, chil? dren orphans, fathers fiends, and all of them paupers and beggars It feeds rheumatism, nurses gout, welcomes epidemics, invites cholera, imports pes? tilence, and embraces consumption. It fills your jails, supplies your al m houses end demands your asylums. It engen? ders controversies, fosters quarrels and cherishes riots. It crowds the peniten? tiaries and furnishes victims for the scaffolds. It is the life-blood of the gambler, the elements of the burglar, the prop of the highwayman, and mid? night incendiary. It countenances the liar, respects the thief and esteems thc J blasphemer. It violates obligations reverances fraud, honors infamy, de? fames benevolence, hates love, scorns virtue, end slanders innocence. It in- | . cites the father to butcher his helpless offspring, helps the husband to massacre his wife, and the child to grind the par? ricidal axe. It burns up men, con? sumes women, detests life, curses God and despises beaven. It suborns wit? nesses, nurses perjury, defiles the jury box, and stains the judicial ermine. It degrades the citizen ; debases the legis? lator, dishonors the ?tateman and dis? arms the patriot. It brings shame' not honor : terror, not safety ; despair, not hope ; misery, not happiness ; and, with the malevo? lence of a fiend, it calmly surveys frightful desolation d'ssatisfied with its havoc, ruins morals, blights confidence, dissolves friendship, slays reputation, wipes ont national honor and curses the world, then laughs at the ruin it has accomplished. *Lt does all this and more-it kills * the soul. It is the sum of villainies the father of all crimes, the mother of abominations, the devil's best friend and God's worst enemy.' Don t be Mean, Boys, Sometimes I 'wonder what a mean ^man thinks about wben he goes to bed. When be tarns out the light and lies down alone be- is then compelled to be honest erith himself. Not a bright thought, not a gener?os impulse, not e word of blessing, not a grateful look comes back to him ; not ? penny dropped io the hand of poverty nor the balm of a loving word dropped into an aching heart ; no sunbeam of encouragement cast upon a struggling life ; no strong right hand of fellowship reached ont to beip some fallen man to his feet-when none of these things come to bim as the 'God bless you' of the departed day, how he must hate himself-how be must try to roil away from himself and sleep on the other side of the bed-when the only victory he cen think of is some mean victory, in which he bas wronged a neigbor. No wonder be always sneers when he tries to smile. How pure and good all the rest of the world must look to him, end bow careless and dreary must his own path appear. Why, even one isolated act of meanness is enough to scatter cracker crumbs m the bed of an average man, and what must be the feelings of a man whoso whole life is given up to mean acts? When there is so mach suffering and heartache and misery iii the world, aoyhow, why should anyone add a pound of wicked? ness or sadness to the general burden ? Don't be mean, boys. Ono of the best things to be, says Charles Dudley Warner, is a boy. He was one himself once, and he ought to know. He says that it re? quires no experience, though it needs some practice to be a good one. The disadvantage of the position is that it does uot last long enough. It is soon over. Just as you get used to being a boy, you have to be some? thing else, with a good deal more work to do, and not half so much fun. And yet, every boy is anxious to be a mau, and is very uneasy with the restrictions that are put upon him as a boy. There are so many bright spots in the life of a farm boy that I some? times think I should like to live the life over again. ? should almost be willing to be a girl if it were not fer the chores. There is a great comfort to a boy in the amount of work he can get rid of doing. It is sometimes astonishing how slow he can go on an errand. Perhaps he could not explain himself why, when he is sent to the neighbors after yeast, he stops to stone frogs. He is not exactly cruel, but be wants to see if he can hit 'ern. It is a curious fact about boys, that two will be a great deal slower tn doing anything than one. Boys have a great power of help? ing each other do nothing. But say what you will about the general usefulness of boys, a farm without a boy would very soon come to grief. He is always in demand In the first place, he is to do all the errands, go to the store, the post of? fice, and to carry all sorts of mes? sages. He would like to have as many legs as a wheel has spokes, and rotate about in the same way. This he sometimes tries to do, and people who have seen him 'turning cart wheels* along the side of the road, have supposed he was amusing him? self aud idling his time. He was only trying to invent a new mode of loco? motion, so that he could economise his legs, and do his errands with greater dispatch. Leap-frog is one of his methods of getting over ground quick? ly. He has a natural genius for com? bining pleasures with business.-Chris? tian at Work. How to Become Happy. Many young persons are ever think ing over some new ways of adding to their pleasures. They always look for chances for more 'fuu,' more joy. Once there was a wealthy and pow? erful king, full of care and very un? happy.
