It has been recently shown that a much more sonorous tone io stringed instruments, cao be obtained with metal strings than with those now in ase, the best best results being given by steel ?ires plated with silver or copper. Dr. Carlos Finlay, of Havana, main? tains that mosquitoes may spread yellow fever, and reports haviog seen under the microscope, spore s and filaments of ar particular nature on the sting of a mosquito that had just bitten a yellew fever patient. The first astronomical photograph was a Daguerrean picture of the sun, which was taken in France by Fizeau and Foucaulton, -April 2d, 1845. This was soon followed by photographs of the moon, obtained in the United States by Rutherford and in England by Warren de Ia Rue. Later still, Rutherford and Gould obtained photographic charts of the stars and Draper succeeded in photo? graphing the great nebula of Orion. In 1881 the first photograph of a comet with its tail was secured at Meudon, France. The photograph plate is now one of the astrooomers's important instruments of investigation, enabling him to preserve accurate records of the heavenly bodies which even the most powerful telescopes j fail to reveal to the eye. A piece of phosphorescent limestone from Utah, was recently exhibited to the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences by Prof..H. C. Lewis. It emitted a lurid red light when struck, scratched or heated. On seeking other specimens of limestone having such .properties it was fouud that some from India gave a strong yellow glow when heated, but yielded no such effect when scratched or struck. These two lime* stones have the same external charac? ters, which are different from those of other limestones-a fact which is of great interest, as it confirms Becquerel's view that phosphorescence depends upon physical rather than chemical con? ditions. When seen from the temperate zooe the aurora borealis appears very higb above the earth's surface, the estimates of its minimum height which have been made being stated to average hardly less than 125 miles. In the Artic regions, however, the aurora is often very much lower. A member of the Danish Cir? cumpolar Station, which was maintain? ed at Godthaab in Greenland during the winter of 1882-3, reports that bis party several times saw aurorae below the clouds, and even so low and so near that the tops of low mountains five or six miles away were seen above and far beyond them. Other observers have giveu accounts of aurorae which seem? ed to be not more than a few yards above sea-level. Prof. Streenstrop, an eminent zoologist, eveo asserts that, while walking in Iceland in 1840, be and two companions saw auroral stream? ers appearing between themselves, and this occurred several times during the walk although the pedestrians kept only about a yard apart.
