I never knew a man to improve his reputation by drinking, though I have known many reputations injured by the practice. I never knew a man to lengthen his day by drinks, though 1 have known many men to shorten them. I never knew a man to acknowledge that he found drinking expensive, though I have known some to pawn their clothes for liquor. I never knew a lady or gentleman to promote the interest of society by offering the wine cop as a beverage. I never knew a person who made alcoholic stimulants the chief remedy for every little ailment, who did not suffer more from the remedy than from the disease, / I never knew a man addicted to the ase of intoxicating drinks, however great a drunkard, who could not suc? ceed in reforming by persistently re? fusing to touch, taste, or handle the unclean thing.-E. I remember once, when m company with a lady who was then a foremost leader of society in th 2*3 country, that I, being young and foolish, refused petulantly to undeitakc some simple duty which awaited me. "Some other time !" I pleaded. "To-morrow will do as well." Mrs. G-turned suddenly. '.To-morrow'?" she said Her face was not apt to betray emotion, but BOW it showed sharp pain. "Some other time ? I wish ! could keep those excuses from the lips of every young man or woman ! Let me tell yon a little circumstance of my own life, and jos will understand why 1 say this. "About fifteen years ago, I found fa one of the poorest quarters of this city a woman, whom I had known as a child. She was the daughter of a planter in the county in Virginia in which I was bom. We had gone to the saate little school, played and grown ap together. "She had married some scapegrace, aow a childless widow, mis poer, but too proud to accept Reoccupied a decent room ? $ in the neighborhood of the aba toi r, and supported herself by making dresses for the batchers' wives and for servant girls. They were poorly made, for she was no seamstress. "She hud no associates but these wo? men. 1 tried in vaiu to induce her to come to my house. All I could do was to go once or twice a week and sit with her for an hour or two, recall? ing Ute dear old home gossip and jokes : laughing together, or crying out of full hearts. 1 was her only friend, the one only trace left of her old life, and I knew what my visits were to her. "In the winter of 1870 her health failed rapidly. I was absent in Vir? ginia. I went purposely to the old homestead, where her uncles still liv? ed, gathering up every scrap of infor? mation which I thought would touch or please her ; I brought copies of photographs of her brothers and moth? er ; and more than all, brought a cor? dial invitation from her uncles to come to them and spend her remaining days at home. "lt was early on a rainy November day when I returned to the city. I wa? tired with the journey. I thought of C-, however, and begau to prepare to go to her, but, looking out at the rain and mud I said, as you did just now, 'To-morrow will do ; some other time,1 and sat down by the fire. "The next day I went. A scrap of black maslin was tied on the handle of her door. 'Yes/ the landlady said, 'she sauk very slow, and she has been watching for you every day. All day yesterday she sat by that window looking down thc street, and saying now and then, "Something tells me she'll be sure to come to day.7 " Mrs. C- stopped abroptly, wiping the tears from her pale face. "I cannot tell you what this Itas cost me since then. It is the one lost op? portunity to which I cannot become reconciled. It is thc feeling that she is gone, and that I can never make it up to her-never ask her to forgive. "When I hear those words, to? morrow ! To-morrow !' it is with a sharp paiu, hopeless and bitter.1' Origin of the Names of the Days. In the Museum of Berlin, in the hall devoted to Northern antiquities, they have the representations from the idols from which the carnes of the days of the week are derived. From the idol of the SUD comes Sun? day. This idol is represented with hi* face like the sun, holding a burning ?heel, with hands on his breast, signi? fying bis coarse around the world. The idol of the Moon, from which somes Monday, is habited in a short :oat, like a man, but holding the moon ID his hands. Tuiso, from which comes Tuesday, sra? one of the most ancient and popu? lar gods of the Germaus, and is repre? sented in his garments of sk i us acco tei? ng to their peculiar manner of cloth tig ; the third day of the week was ledicated to his worship.
