The young lad had indeed not only made a 'better choice1 in . securing the precious Bible as a lamp to hts feet and a guide to holiness, but also proved that those who are eager for tho things of this world-grasping for money-may lose far greater good Arno they imagine ; for our Heavenly Fatber? as that good Quaker, oftcn ' times adds innumerable blessings to godliness, or makes" one rich with a contented spirit here, and a glorious hope of ao eternal life hereafter while those who alone seek for riches -the bread that perishes-may lose all here and hereafter. To make a wise yoe mest look ahead. The Sarcastic Young Woman. Insufferable though the giggling, gushing girl may be, she ts angelic wheo compared with her sarcastic sis? ter? The sarcastic girl is, in some in ?faims? the product of hasty or ill-ad? vised compliment paid her by some thoughtless admirer on her making -some spiteful criticism or some rude re? mark concerning an acquaintance or cam pan ion. She has not the ability to distinguish between impudence and satire, and it is aa easy task to convince ber that ill bred rudeness of speech is the perfec? tion of irony, and that to say spiteful ead unpleasant things to everybody she meets is sure to win her thc repara? tion of being sarcastic. She eagerly j cultivates her fancied talent, not al? lowing an opportunity to exercise it to pass unimproved, and she generally j succeeds in make herself heartily dis liked by those who are unfortunate t enough to be numbered among her ac? quaintances. Yoong men, who arc generally sen? sitive to ridicule avoid, her systemati? cally. She attributes this to the whole? some lear in which she is held. The family think her brilliant when j every one else pronounces her insult? ing. Her sarcasm generally deg ene-1 rates into insolence, and she is regard- j ed ts a pest. Without friends, she be- j comes lonely and dissati>fied, but is j still far from guessing the true reason ; cf her forlorn state, for she cannot esti? mate its disagreeable effect upon others. - ? i i ' awi Itt a letter respecting his golden, wedding, which was celebrated at the home of bis son, Feb. 4, 1881, Bishop Fierce makes the following reference to his religious experience : *I wa. -in? verted in my sixteenth year. Well nigh coincident with it was my call to preach. The settlement of this ques? tion I held in abeyance tili I had gone through college, secretly hoping that the conviction of duty would wear out and pass sway. When the time for decision came. Constitution (Dem.) says ; it looks as if they would rapidly occupy tie estire State of Georgia, outside of Asee counties, that hold the eight largest cities. The Iowa Legislature last Wednes? day presented its first medal and parse. The recipteut was Miss Kate Shelley, the sixteen-year-old girl, who, two and a half years ago, saved a passenger train from destruction. The medal is of gold, appropriately inscribed, and the purse contains ?200 in gold. On the night of July 6, 1881, Central Iowa was swept by a furious storm of rain and wind. The tributary streams of the fcDes Moines River were greatly swollen, and a freight train on the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad plunged through the Iloney Creek Bridge, uear little Miss Shelly's home. She was alone, but, witnessing the ac* cident, set out through the storm to Moingona, the nearest station, a mile away to report the accident. To reach the station, it was necessa? ry for Miss Shelly to cross the high trestle bridge over the Des Moines Uiver, which was exposed to the full force of the storm, and about 500 feet in length. She crept upon the struc? ture; the wind, the rain, the thunder and lightning were appaling She nearly lost her balance, and just es? caped falling into the swollen stream. She could not see a foot ahead of her. The darkness was intense, except when the dazzling lightniug revealed the timbers and the surging and seething waters below. Knowing that not a moment must be lost, she crept from tie to tie, across the high trestle. Hav? ing gained the ground on the further side she ran to the station and told her storv in breathless haste, and fell un mp T conscious at the feet of the station keep? er. Telegrams were sent flying up and down the line notifying all of the loes of Honey Creek bridge. The express came thundering along with many pas? sengers on board, and was stopped in time to avert what would have certainly been a terrible disaster. The railroad company made the girl a handsome present, named a station Shelly in her honor and sen t her a life-time pass good on all railways. The True Pulpit Spirit. When yon see a roan enter the pul? pit and present himself with an air of self assurance, as much as to say, *I am here, know what I am about, and feel sure I can teach you,' and then proceed in a dictatorial tone and man? ner, you may set it down that man has either mistaken his calling or has not learned how its functions should be performed. Modesty, with a reverent and solemn air, becomes bim who would bear a message from God to men. Let the love for siuners, as re? deemed by the blood of Christ, and having the offer of life and salvation, be in the heart, and it will show itself in the tones of voice, in the words used, and in all thc outer acts and demean? or of the man. All with him will in? dicate sympathy and tendernos. Taking up one's cross means simply, writes Mr. Ruskin, that you are to go to the road which you see to be the straight one carrying whatever yon find is given you to carry as well and stoutly as you can, without making faces or calling people to come and look you. Above ali, you are neither to load or unload yourself, nor cut your cross to your own liking. Some people think it would be better for them to have it large, and many that they would carry it much faster if it were small ; and even those who like it largest are particular about its being ornamental and made of thc best ebony. Bot all that yon have really to do is to keep your back as straight as you can, and not think about what is upon it-above all, uot boast what is upon it. Thc real and essential meaning of 'virtue' is in that straightness of back.
