Indeed another might give s the baby food and clothing; but boys t at' their latter age need great mother tove _and care to keep them from going wrong.:. Everything that draws them nearer to* a mother, and makes them respect her more, is worth attention. My boys*tiever think of a walk in the streets of an evening, but sometimes spend an hour at a friends house, or ask a few boys here. Mother is always importuned to join in any games or plays, and very^pften to take a hand r with them. Oh, it would be dreadful j to roe to feel that my boys were slip ping away from mother's influence, and I hope never to know it, even when my head is gray/ It is such mothers wh^> retain their hold on the children while life lasts, and who are mourned with heart bro ken sincerity when they are removed. And the same guiding hand reaches out still through the mists of time and helps to shape the child's destiny for ever. Feeding Them with a Spoon. A pastor writes: 'I have always bad to feed my flock with a spoon ;* and by I this mixed metaphor seems to mean to | say that the people to whom he preaches ever remain weak and undeveloped Christians, and need continually to be helped when they ought the much rath er to heap. There are far too many such Christians. Scarcely a church can be found without them, and in too many churches they form a majority of the members. They seem never to J learn more than the rudiments of Christian doctrine. They seldom ex hibit strength enough to withstand common temptations. They can sel dom even I>e depended on for any real- ! ly valuable Christian labor. After j being church members nearly a life- ! time, they seem to staud in the posses- j sion of the graces of Christian character 1 just about where they stood the "day ! they entered the church. Answering the Bishop. In 1877 Bishop Bowman went to i Boise City, Idaho, to hold conference, i One Sunday afternoon he got the Sab- j bath schools* together and bad a splen- ! did time talking to the children. He | was an admirable teacher, and soon had j all the little ones answering questions. I He tried to explain the operations of | the mind through the brain, but find- j log it difficult to make them under- ! ?Und, he put his forefinger on the top of his head, saying, 4 What is there ?' Grains. Kindness is the music of good will to men; and on this harp the smallest * fingers may play heaven's sweetest j tunes on earth. Death is not the end, but the begin- j ning of life. We perish here, that we may die no more to the everlasting glories of heaveu ! The noblest life a man can live is a life of service devoted to God and man. It embraces earth and heaveu, time and eternity, and exalts the s9d1. We often misjudge others. If we knew the motives that prompted ^ them, or the circumstances by which they were surrounded, our judgment would be far different. It is a beautiful thought to keep one's grave strewn with fresh flowers, and it is so much more convenient to do this than it is to make the world pleasant for him while in F.fe. The life of a true Christian is like a beautiful river; it flows on in a steady, even course; the storm of life may ruf fle its surface, but the deep under cur rent moves on undisturbed. Nothing is so contagious as enthusi asm ; it is the real allegory of the lute of Orpheus ; it move? stones ; it charms brutes. Enthusiasm is the genius of sincerity, and truth accomplishes no victors without it. A man of long experience in siD is always a worse man than he seems to himself to be. The day of judgment is to be a day of fearful surprises and overwhelming revelations in self knowl edge. Every kindly word and feeling, every good deed aod thooght. every good action and impulse, is like the ark-sent jove, and returns from the troubled waters of life bearing a green olive branch tc the soul. If you tell your troubles to God, you put them into the. grave; they will oever rise again when you have com mitted them to Him. If you roll your burden anywhere else, it will roll back again like the stone of Sisyphus. Man can never come up to his ideal standard ; it is the nature of the im mortal spirit to raise that standard higher and higher, as it goes from strength to strength still upward or on- . tvard. Accordingly the wisest and greatest men are ever the most modest. Disease is an effect, not a cause. Its origin I s vitbin; its manifestations without.'.Hence, o core the the disease the cause must be re nored, and in no other way can a cure ever ? >e effected.
