The Bible a Library in Itself. lit case the famine of books should be sore in the land, there is one thing _^__wjbich you all have, and that is, your Bible; and a minister with his Bible is , like David with his sling and stone, ^_fully equipped* for the fray. No man may say that he has no well to draw from while the Scriptures are within reach. In the Bible we have a perfect library; and he who studies it tho roughly will be a better scholar than if heiiad devoured the Alexandrian libra ry entire. To understand the Bible should be our ambition; we should be familiar with it, as familiar as a bouse* wife with her needle, the merchant with his ledger, the mariner with his ship. We ought to know its general run, the contents of each book, the details of its histories, its doctrines, its precepts, and everything about it. Erasmus, speak ing of Jerome, asks; *Who but he ever learned by heart the whole Scrip ture ; or imbibed, or meditated on it as he did V It is said of Witsius, a learned Dutchman, author of the famous work on The Covenants, that he also was able not merely to repeat every word of Scripture in the original tongues, but _to give the -context, and the criticisms ot'-tho best authors; and I have heard ofira^Mjoinister in Lancashire, that be was a 'walking concordance/ and oooldv either give you chapter and TersC%>r any passage quoted, or, vice versa, could correctly give the words when the place was mentioned. That may have been a feat of memory, but the study needful to it must have beeu highly profitable.. I do not say you must aspire to that; but if you could, it would be well worth the gaining. It was one of -he fortes of that singular genius, William Huntington (whom I will not now either commend or cen sure,) that in preaching he iocessautly quoted Holy Scripture, and was accus tomed, whenever he did so, to give the \ chapter and the verse; and in order to show his independence of the printed book it was his uncomely habit to re move the . Bible from the front of the pulpit. A man who has learned not merely the letter of the Bible, but its inner spirit, will be no mean man, whatever deficiencies he may labor under. You know the old proverb, lCave ab homine unius libri.' 'Beware of the man of one book/ He is a terrible antagonist. A man who has bis Bible at his fingers' ends, and in his heart a core, is a champion in our Israel; you cannot compete with him ; you may have an armory of weapons, but his scriptural knowledge will overcome yon; for it is a sword like that of Cfoliah, of which David said: *There is none like it.' The gracious William Romaine, I be lieve, in the latter part of his life, put away all his books and read nothing at , all but his Bible He was a man of j learning, a scholarly man ; yet he chose the one book and was made mighty by it. If we are driven to do the same i>y necessity, let us recollect that some have done it by choice; and let us not bemoan our lot; for the Scriptures will be sweeter than honey to our taste, and will make us' 'wiser than the an cients.* Psalms cxix: C9, 100. Wc shall never be short of holy matter if we are continually studying the in spired volume ; nay, it is not only mat ter that we shall find there, but illus tration, too, for, singularly enough, the Bible is its own best illustrator. If you want anecdotes, simile, allegory, j or parable, turn to the sacred page, j Scriptural truth never looks more lovely than when she is adorned with jewels from her own treasury. I have lately been reading through the Books of the j Kings and the Chronicles; I have be- j come enamored of them; they are as j fall of divine instruction as the' Psalms or Prophets, if read with open eyes. I think it was Ambrose who used to say, 'I adore the infinity of Scripture.' I hear that s?.aie voice which sounded in the ears of Augustine concerning the Book of God: 'Tolle, Lege'?;Take, read.' It may be yog will dwell in retirement in some village, where there is no one to converse with who is above your own level, and where you will meet with very few books that are worth your reading; then read and meditate in the law of the Lord both day and night, and you shall be 'as a tree planted by the rivers of water.' Make tbe Bible the man of your right hand, the companion of every hour, and you will have no excuse to fear, because of your slender equipment in inferior things.?Spttrgeon. The Hand that Saved Us. Two painters were employed to fresco tbe walls of a cathedral. Both stood on the rode scaffold constructed for their purpose, some forty feet from the floor. One of them was so intent upon bis work that he became wholly absorbed, and, in admiration, stood off from tbe picture, gazing at it with intense de light. Forgetting where he was, he moved slowly, surveying leisurly the work of his pencil, until he had neared the edge of the plank upon which he stood. At this critical moment bis companion turned suddenly, and, almost paralyzed with horror, beheld his imminent peril. Another instant, and the enthusiast would be precipita ted upon the pavement beneath. If be spoke to him, it was certain death ; if he held his peace, death was equally sure. Suddenly he regained bis presence of miod, and seizing a wet brush, flung it against the wall, spat tering the picture with unsightly blotches of coloring. The painter flew forward and turned upon his friend with fierce upbraidings; but, starting at his ghastly face, be listened to the recital of danger, looked suddenly over the dread space below, and, with tears of gratitude, blessed the hand that saved him. Just so we" sometimes get absorbed upon tbe pictures of the world, and, in contemplating them, step back | ward, unconscious of our peril; when Almighty God in mercy dashes eur beautiful images, and drives us, at the time we are complaining .of His deal ings, into His wide-stretched arms of compassion and love.
