Assistant P. M. All the stores were closed yesterday in hon? or of oar deceased President. Read the new card of P. & A. J. Moses, to be found ia another column. The W. & S. wishes to employ a poet. Don't ftH speak at once, let it on mildly. "Ye Fool" puts in his bill this week, but means no barm. Hon. Jobi? S. Richardson and Capt. E. C. Green have our thanks for late Northern pa ' pets. Our Stateburg correspondent mnst send us his name to insure the publication of his ar? ticle. This rule is inviolable. A negro named Charles Washington, in the Cane Savannah neighborhood was bitten by a snake or lamprey eel a short time ago, and . died in 24 hours. . Miss Annie Sherwood, formerly of this . place, died on the 19th inst., at Manning after a severe attack of typhoid fever. The funeral sermon was preached by Rev. James McDowell last Tuesday. The Charleston Sunday Netcs of the 25th, contains the funeral notice of Christine, i daughter of the late C. C. Bowen, aged 1 year, : 1 month, and 22 d ivs. \ Ia compliance with the recommendation of President Arthur, divine services were held in the Methodist and Presbyterian Churches : yesterday. The other churches remained closed. '. The front of the Post Office was very taste? fully draped in mourning yesterday, in re? spect to the late President, whose picture was placed just above the door leading to the Mon? ey Order department. The Joint Stock Store also displayed a pic? ture of President Garfield draped in mourning, And suspended upon a United States Sag. On Sunday two weeks ago, just as Mr. j Robt. Broun and bis father reached home from church and drove undei a shed, they were stunned by a stroke of lightning wnich killed two goats near by under the shed. ?"He that hath a trompee sad bloweth it cot, the trumpet of the same shall not be blowed." Morai: ??osr merchants don't Wow tb?rr trumpets through our colamns, no blowing vriH be done for them by us. Mr. J. W. Villeneuve is the accredited agent for the Watchman and Southron, and is engaged j in canvassing the county in its interest. So | far his success has been altogether satisfying i We have waited, sometimes patiently acd i sometimes otherwise, but no one tas yet come F np to read for as -the collection -of sentences ^published last weak. The telephone system is soon to be in vogue in Sasrter. You can then send a message kore and have vour dinner on the table bv tte Ume you get there. Judging from th* way the young folks pair off on Sunday nights, we shall cot oe sur? prised-to hear of m ul ti md es of matrimonial alliances before loog. There was a large and delightful dance on the evening of Friday last at Acton, the resi? dence of Air. Samuel E. Kelson, in the State feacg aeighborhood. Besides the regular at? tendance of the neighborhood, there were Dr. and Mrs. Bragg of Ala., several of the Cam? den gentlemen, and quite a number from Sumter. Mr. Altamont Moses bas moved io the store K. E corner of iiaic and Liberty streets, where he offers a choice stock of new goods. His new advertisement was received too late for insertion this week, bat will appear next week. As he.is buying cotton on orders, he is always prepared to give the top of the mar? ket. A visit to his establishment will pay ia these Lard times. One of our editors dined on Venison on Sunday. It was a fine steak from the hind? quarter of a tbiee-suugged buck, killed by-. But may be we had better not tell, as the game law says deer are not to be killed till October 1st. The meat, however, was just as good as if it had been killed according to legislative regulation. This is our latest dream, and we await its fulfilment: Resolved-First-That cotton-buy? ers be not allowed to crowd the side-walks with cotton bales. Second-That passing trains be prohibited from blowingtheir whistles within our corporate limits. Third-That our policemen circulate along our back-streets at night and take up drunken rowdies who con? gregate on the corners. '"The love of money is a root of all evil." j This old adage was practically and forcibly j demonstrated the other day. One Levi Thc- j mas, a hand on the new rail road, having ? stolen a few dollars from some one ia camp, was tried by a court instituted for the occa? sion by his co-workers, and he having been j found guilty was sentenced to ten severe strokes npon bis bare back which were ad? ministered by a sturdy fellow with a five foot root. Yesterday morning we received from our young friend Knox, the Arizona Journal in which a detailed account appears of the burn? ing of the grocery store of his brother II. D. \ Corbett. The entire establishment was de-j Btroyed, which was only partly insured. A j good deal of excitement prevailed for some! time among those present at the conflagration as it was believed that Knox had been burnt np in the fire, but all fears were dispelled fupon the appearance ofKn?x, who had been down town to see his girl. Concert. The tim? of the- conceit advertised for j Thursday Oct. 6tb, has been changed to ? Wednesday evening, Or.t-, 5th. at Music Hall, j at 3 o'clock, for the benefit of the Sumter j Light Infantry, to assist in tripping them for ; the Yorktown Centennial. This concert is given by ladies at?d gentle- j men of this place, well known for their musi- j cal talent, and is under the management: of Mr. D. J. Auld. These facts arc sufficient to insure the public that it will be a musical treat, and it only remains fora liberal patron? age to make it a success. We have seen the programme which consists j of choruses, quartets, duets, solos, a recita? tion by Gen. Moise, and two short readings by good readers. Price of admission to concert will be-re? served seats 35cts ; genet al admission 25cis. Let everybody turn oat and givu tbs S. L. I. a handsome benefit-Look out for hand? bills. Prof. Agostiui will give a Grand Soiree immediately after the concert. The Sumter Light Infantry wi?] be pleased to sec all their country friends vin on ti"* 0C A Serious Accident. Near Bethel Church, on Saturday last, while playing base ball, Messrs. W. M Brown and Edward McKoy ran to catch a bali on the fly, when they collided, causing serious injuries. The former had his forehead cut open, skull cracked., nose broken and was also badly ruptured, for life. The latter had his teeth knocked loose and his lip cut through, which had to bc sewed up. Drs. Dick and DuBosc were summoned to attend . them. ! This is another sad warning to thc players of ba?e ball, lt is our opinion that it is about time for baseball to "play out.:; The Sumter Light Infantry. At the last regular meeting of the Company the following was adopted: Whereas, Messrs. A. A. So'omons, D. J. Winn k Co., J. Ryticnberg & Sons, Ducker k Buitman, A. J. China, J. Theo. Solomons, A. White, William Bogin. B. J. Barnett, M. Furstenbnrg, J. D. Craig, the Watchman and Southron Publishing Co., merchants -and business men of the Town of Sumter, have at much inconvenience and some sacrifice cheer I fully permitted such of their clerks and em? ployees as are members of the Sumter Light Infantry to attend the Yorktown Centennial in October: and whereas by this patriotic ac? tion they will have thus contributed to the proper representation of South Ca:-: lina and Sumter in these ceremonies, both of which names are most houor:?bly associated with the events culminating in the siege and surrender at Yorktown, be it therefore Resolved, That the Sumter Light Infants is justly proud of the sympathy and co-opera? tion of those honorable gentlemen ; and that their generous and patriotic conduct is worthy cf all commendation by the Community at large. Resolved, That those resolutions bc publish? ed in the papers of our Town. Things I Have Notised. BY YE FOOL. I have notised that if won fool dont rito, another will, and so I mayso well roll in again. I have notised that the Sumter Lite j Infantry and Blud-Red Dragoons are powerful worked up about that York? town trip, and Fm thiukiu' that sum of 'em wont go wh J'S spectin to do so ; and how can the country spare 'em any? how ? Who'll keep the stores, and sell teu cents shugar for fifteen, and doutful eggs for fresh laid ; and who'll be at home to be stirred aroun' if the baby gets the collick ; and who'll be here to loaf about the Court House and borrow twenty cents to play billyards, and soak up the treats when a feller gets enough ou to make him giurous? I'm down OD this Yorktown trip. It'll be the rcwin of our country. I have notised that wimmen dress inky funny now. I got a glimpse of one as she sailed down Main S. the other daj with jib-boom a-flying. Her dress was maid out of ten cent hed-ban kercher cloth, and she had a band round ker waste-place that could a run Epper? son's ruvU. Over the top of her shuse I saw sumthin' red, and right then I said, Br. Awl feas thrown a broken bottle in the street, and that gal has cut herself. Thon ciy temper got up, and I waz about to git A<wl in the gard-house, but I remembered his experience in the gard house line, and let up ou him. I afterwards found out the woman had on red stockins. But they was powerful red, and that's just why gurls hav to run frota cows. Hed-hankercher dresses and red stockins-! bless you, souney, it's all I can do to keep from running at em myself, and suuitimes I wish I was a cow just for fifteen minks But this desire don't lust long. For as soon as I think of the poor things that are huug up in the market and of the curses heaped upon 'em round our biek fast tables, I say, I'm glad i ain't a cow. On the uther hand its nice to see a gurl Straten out on the home stretch, as she makes away from a cow, and I don't ex? actly know whether I want to bc a cow or not. Thc uther things I have notised must lie over till there time comes. Beautifiers. Ladies, you cannot make fair skin, rosy cheeks and sparkling eyes with all the cos? metics of France, or beautifiers of the world, while in poor health, and nothing will give you such good health, strength, bouyant spirits and beauty as Hop Bitters. A trial is certain proof.- Telegraph. "I suffered terrible wi.h nervous debility, caused by deranged kidneys, and was perma? nently cured by Prof. Guilmette's French Kidney Pads, when other remedies gave no relief,'*' writes a young Dayton merchant.
