The Poet Office Rent. The postmaster general rounded up his inspectors the other day, and among other things in the way of instruction imparted to the sleughs Was the warning that "great pressure must be brought to bear to keep the rentals within bounds until such time as the government, by appropriation cVioll anfirfilv Hn AWAV AUU VUttVUUVUV) OWUi V*?VMV?/ V.W w?. with the policy of leasing." At the present time there are several considerations that influence the location of a site and the building of a local poet office building. Receipts of the office must total a sum sufficient to put the office in a certain 'class." After that the congJfessman needs a certain amount of cajoling, and then he proceeds to exercise whatever pull he may possess in or* der to get a bill through congress. If he belongs to the majority party there is a probability that he may work the hill' past the legislative pitfalls and keep the proposition from being buried in the pigeon-holes of the post office, treasury and other departments. But that is not all of the story. The custom is to build all new post office buildings "in keeping with the dignity of a rich government" This custom is so rigidly observed that most of the new buildings are a thousand per cent more commodious than the rented quarters they replace, and if 5,000 of them were built throughout the country the (10,000/100 that Is now paid out in rent would be consumed annually in the additional cost of upkeep. On the other hand, people everywhere are asking, why should the government pay out rent for all these postoffices, since the post office business is in no sense a transient enterprise? To which the answer is always voiced by the minority party in power at the time in the nation, that "these buildings are political pork." Doubtless what Postmaster General Work has in mind is an entire reform x in methods by which the "pork barrel," and the abuses incident to the public buildings policy in the past, may be overcome. It has frequently been argued in the halls of congress that the government could sol the entire problem by putting up 'standardized" buildings?the same % , kind in each Community. Of course everyone would expect that these public buildings would be attractive and creditable to the government and to the community. Fokker, whose airplanes were used extensively by the Germans during the war, has come to America and is now cooperating with the American Naval designers, according to American Legion information. Experiments in which Fokker is taking an active part are being made at the government aviation station at Anacostia, D. C. The membership rolls of the London post of the American Legion show that it has members in 25 countries, including ex-service men in such places as Java, China, Egypt, Turkey and British East Africa. So many ex-service men in Ohio applied for conpensation under the state law that the original appropriated fund was exhausted. In order that ail veterans mignt receive me payments due them the American Legion urged Governor Harry L. Davis to call a special session of the legislature to enact the necessary legislation for additional funds. "The former service men of America represented by the American Legion have a deep regard in their hearts for France?for tnere exists between our two great republics the strongest of all bonds, those between men who have fought side by side against a common enemy, and the gift of your wonderful painting 'America' to the American Legion has welded those bonds even stronger," wrote Hanford MacNxder, national commander of the Legion in a letter of appreciation to Leon Renimel, painter of the French picture which has just been presented by the " ?* ? ?
