Officers of the coming year were elected as follows: President, T. P. Young, Greenwood; first vice-president, R. M. Dacus of Greenville and secretary and treasury', Frank M. Smith of Charleston. Mr. Smith was reelected to serve as secretary and treasurer for his 23rd consecutive term. W. Edward Boyd of Greenville ? Calder of Greenville was reelected as a member of the board of health. At the annual meeting in Greenville in 1923 the South Carolina pharmacists will be joined by the druggists of North Carolina for a joint session. The association discussed scientific research and recent discoveries in the pharmaceutical line and wound up its fall business. The association also determined to organize a ladies' auxiliary to the association. Several resignations were received from members who have moved out of the state. The visiting pharmacists enjoyed their visit to Florence despite the rainy weather which interfered to a large extent with the entertainment program. Reflecting the rigidness of the pharmaceutical examinations in South ? Carolina exactly one-half of the ap k pilcants before tne examining ooaru L here failed to make the necessary grades tu receive their license, only 15 of the 30 applicants being passed ft this moniing by the examining board Fr in making up the grades. Successful applicant^ were the following who were licensed as pharmacists: J. B. HHT Agnew of Greenville, B. H. Aimar of Charleston, Charles H. Bradford of Fort Mill, W. W. Culp of Union, A. M. Greene of Greenwood, James T. W' Hough of Lancaster, A. G. Kennedy of Greenwood, R. C. Noble of Branchville, C. T. Paysinger of Newberry, H. H. Poston of Summerton, B. M. Salley, Jr., of Salley, Lillian A. Sorter (negro) of Union, W. 0. Seymour of Charleston, Joel H. Stone of Greenwood and J. G. Ziegler of Kingstree. A. K. Ackerman of Orangeburg was licensed as assistant pharmacist. ?o Their Duty and Ours. Leipsic (Ohio) Free Press: Our tmiM'n* officials own a duty to us and we owe a duty to them. We send senators and congressmen to Washington to make laws for us. We elect a president whose duty it is to see to a proper administration of those laws. When a senator or a congressman goes to the capital he possesses a hazy idea of what his constituents desire. If he is newly elected his heart burns and throbs with a laudable ambition to accomplish wonderful things for "his people." He is determined to send home the bacon. In fact, the |p "leaders" promptly give him to understand that he is a very little po tato in a mighty big basket. He learn, also, that if he is a "good" Indian" and votes as the leaders dictate he may be graciously permitted to send home a sliver of bacon where he had hoped to send a slice. He is duly impressed with the fact that big fish in congress require much feed, while the minnows must content themselves with the crumbs. ^ This is only the "educational" pro-! cess he must undergo upon taking j his seat. In most cases it is effective, and the leaders secure another follower and the constituents back at home lose a defender for their rights. But in many cases the senator or i congressman is not entirely to blame, i The responsibility rests primarily upon the voters who send him forth to battle for them. When we send an army out to i fight we support that army to the utmost of our resources. Without such support its morale would be ; broken and defeat would be its portion. , We should do as much for our 1 representatives in Washington, for I they are fighting our battles of peace | just as much as the army fights them I in time of war. A district should advise its repre! sentative as to what it needs. Then it should actively support that representative in his demands. The "leaders" should be given to under stand that if they desire the futu:e ; support of that district they can expect it only upon condition that the ! district receives its just proportion j of the "bacon" that is so lavishly ' handed out. When a district takes this attitude and follows it up it generally gets what it wants within reason. The leaders soon take alarm and cease their blandishments in their efforts to switch the senator or congressman away from his path of duty to ! his constituents. j We should tell our representatives in Washington what we want and I then make our demands united and 1 stronger than the influence^ opposed t to us. Even a "leader" can tell which way the wind blows when he watches a straw.
