A wife has the right to be alone with a man friend on a public highway without interference from her husband, according to a recent decis sion of the Florida Supreme Court. The case came up through a husband meeting his wife riding alone with another man. He attacked the man, and as a result of the fight that ensued his wife's companion was convicted of assault with intent to murder. The state supreme court reversed the lower tribunal. "There may have been a time when a wife was regarded as her husband's chattel, and being cut alone on a public road with another man regarded as sufficient provocation to justify the husband in making an assault upon her companion, ba?' this is no longer (true, when women enjoy equal freedom with men," said the opinion read by Chief Justice Brown. "The mere walking or driving of a married woman wilh another man, or a married man with another woman, is not sufficient provocation to justify * an assault by either sprouse, and the greater freedom cf intercourse between men and women in this day protects them from unwarranted attacks by a jealous husband or wife, who sees in innocent acts of social intercourse "confirmations as strong as proofs of holy writ' that they are flagrantly immoral." ? o Poultry Breeders' Meet at Columbia. Charleston,August 15.?The fifth annual show of the South Carolina Poultry Breeders' association will be held in connection with the state Fair at Columbia, October 24 to 28, according to announcement made here today by P. E. Adams, president of the organization. Plans are underway to make this the largest show ever held by the South Carolina poultry breedeis, said Mr. Adams, who is in touch with the poultry exhibitors throughout the southeast. All parts of the state are represented in the poultry association and it is believed by the officers that a large number of fine fowls will be shown at Columbia this fall. The directors of the organization, it was explained, are taking an active interest in the matter and promise a full house when the curtain rises on the state Fair. Young, in charge cf the Charleston district engineer corps, visited Georgetown 'ast Thursday relative to the proposed shortening of the | inland waterway between Georgetown | and Charleston via McCIellanville. Through the chamber of commerce the amount of navigation will be ascertained as soon as possible.
