MAKE PEACE OVER COFFIN. | "Devil Anse" Hatfield, Feudist, is Laid To Rest. Logan. W. Ya., Jan. 9.?Cap . An derson (Devil Anse) Hatfield, one time! Confederate army officer and for \ many years thereafter one of the most | famous and picturesque feudists in, the mountains of West Virginia, who died Friday, was today buried beside his two sons, Troy and Elias, in the] family plot three hundred feet beneath the mountain l-ange which sheds j 1 us water into me ui^ ouuuti v?i wn.. one side and the Guyandotte on the! other. The obsequies were attended i by eleven survivors, children almost all of them, forty grandchildren sev-; eral great-grandchildren and aboutj seventy-five descendants. The funeral was characterized throughout by a series of dramatic j occurrences. Before the march to the j cemetary began, the hands of two of j the dead man's sons, long estranged I brothers, were clasped over the coffin. J These were "Cap" Hatfield, the father's namesake and feud lieutenant, and E. C. Hatfield, of Charleston. The reconcilation was attended by a gen-' eral demonstation of approval rnd sympathy among those at the funeral. J As the procession moved, the res- j toration of good will between the' brothers formed the chief subject of discussion, and at the grave before the body was lowered, "Cap" Hatfield addressed "Uncle Dick" Garrett,, an old preacher and friend of the fam- J ily, and told him that he hau "made; his peace with God and was ready to * ?? iu? 1 De Dapuzea wueuever uic iuiuuki would say the word. "I will baptize you boy," responded the old clergyman, "in tl.e very j hole where I baptized your pappy." i To this "Cap" Hatfield dramatically raised his hands above his head in the attitude of solemnity vowing and stated that he had done with fighting, that in his heart there no ' longer rankled malice and that if any man sought his life blood he would not resist. There was no funeral sermon by "Uncle Dike" but the Rev. Green McNeilly, a companion preacher, and who was the elder man was familiarly referred to as "my son in the gospel" spoke briefly, not on the life of "Devil Anse" but on "the lesson of death." Anderson Hatfield was born on Mate Creek, Logan County, eighty-one years ago last September. He served in theConfederate army as a member and later as captain of Company A., Forty-fifth Infantry L'omedcrate army. For years after the form r feud leader had taken up his residence on the Matewan crest and settled in 1 peaceful existence the Kentucky, authorities sought him.
