I have had some experience in grow- j ing sweet potatoes and I find that they, like most other farm commodities, have their season for selling. That is, there is a season when the. demand is greater and the price better than at other seasons of the year. This selling season runs from Jan- > uary 1 to April 1, and the grower who undertakes to keep them until then without a house built especially for that purpose will find the loss from rot too great for him to derive a j profit from growing them. And yet. if they are properly cared for, there J is no other farm commodity that will afford the grower better pay for his labor than a crop of the right varie-! ties of sweet potatoes. They are easily cultivated, will I yield from 125 to 150 bushels to the acre, and sell at tHfe proper season at from $1.25 to $1.50 a bushel, and sometimes twice that price. Sweet potatoes should never be dug j except when the ground is perfectly j dry. Avoid skinning, scarring and j breaking in digging and handling ! them, and do not let them lie out in j the sunshine too long. The best plan 1 is to dig no more in the morning than j can be taken up in the afternoon. j The dirt should be brushed from the ; potatoes and they should be stored away in me puutnj ?uusc as * ai <carried away from the field, so as to avoid handling them too often. After they are stored away in the house or elsewhere they should not be dis- ' turbed until they have passed through j ! the sweat, which will take from 15 to [ 20 days. A perforated tube should pass. j through the bins the long way, so j that fresh air can be given each small j division of the long bin, thus prevent-; 5 ing overheating anywhere in the build- I ing. When t?e weather gets very: i cold the tube can be stopped up. One other essential is a 'hermom-, 5 eter. Without this instrument it is : all guesswork. The atmosphere in j the house should be kept at about 50 ! degrees through the winter and 90 to 100 degrees while the potato is going jj through its sweat. The potatoes: | should be kept perfectly dry and free > from dirt at all times.
