KOMI NEE P APERS COMMENT ON COX v. Members of Daily News Force Much Gratified?Marion Star Admits Ability. Both Governor Cox and Senator Harding beintr newspaper men and both puFdishing in Ohio, it is interesting to note the comment made by the Dayton Daily News and the Marion Star, their respective papers, on the nomination of trovernor uox. Harding's Paper. Senator Harding's Marion Star says: "The action of the San Francisco convention in selecting Gov. James M. Cox to head the Democratic ticket will receive, we believe, the approval f the rank and file of the supporters of the administration. "The dominant influence early manifested in the convention was such that the general thought was that the honor would go to Mr. McAdoo, Attorney General Palmer or some other personage prominent in the party who was closely in touch with the administration. This thought was intensified when the almost absolute control of the White House was made plain m the framing of the platform, Naturally the view was that the convention, having followed in detail the platform plans and specifications as sponsored, would name one high in administration favor to make the race. "The Presidential candidates of the two dominant parties thus being determined, it is pleasing to believe that the campaign will be conducted upon the elevated lines which the high office bespeaks, if it is within the power of the nominees to control it." Cox's Paper. The Dayton Daily News has the following comment on the nomination: "It is hardly necessary to say that the news of the nomination of Go.-. James M. Cox, for President of the United States, by the Democratic party in national convention at San Fran? cisco, furnishes the theme for unalloyed happiness at The News office. Those of us who'have been his associates in the conduct of this paper have been talking about this thing for a long time. We rather expected it, in fact. Life is ever so much sweeter to every one, from pressroom to the roof. "The employes of The News are conscious of a great distinction coming not oily to the newspaper itself and its publisher, but to the city of Dayton, the State of Ohio, and the nation as well. It becomes rather difficult to collect one's thoughts under v the circumstances of the moment. We want to congratulate the 'Chief because we believed he deserved to win. It was written in the stars that this greatest honor should come to him. His record as governor ot unio, as representative from the historic Third Ohio district, and as private citizen Dayton is brilliant No man who endeavors first to be of sen-ice to his fellows can be denied a place in the world. The universe admires a man who sticks everlastingly at it until the principles he favors are triumphant. "Governor Cox is a man of principle. He always has been. Whether it is in the newspaper office, or in the governor's chair, the 'Chief always has been the same. When he decides that a thing must be done for the good of every one, he makes*up his Triin/J that hp will ficht it Out On that line if it takes all summer and winter. "It is not necessary to review his official life. This record i3 illuminated by achievements quite beyond the limits of the space at our command at this instant. He is progressive in every meaning of the word. He is intensely human. He loves his fellowmen and he takes pride in helping them. We like to think of him at this moment as the man who started in life as a farmer's boy. The opportunities of primitive farm life were too limited to hold a man of his striking * -rr V ) abilities and ambitions, ne wor*eu as a reporter, then went to Washington as Congressman Sorg's secretary, then bought the Dayton News. Then he went to congress and was reelected. A jump to the governor's office fol. lowed and then two more terms, a record of no mean consequence in Ohio. What he did in the way of initiating and pressing highminded leg-1 islation for the citizenship of his home state now is history, eternally written in the hearts and minds of his fellow citizens. "We'd like to say to him today, 'Congratulations, Jim,' but he's the chief around here, and we don't call him 'Jim' to his face. But we cannot help, one and all, from the newsboy on the streets to the men who are associated with him in the conduct of the paper, saying: 'Congratulations, governor, God bless you. You'll make latter } a great president and we're for youfrom now on, just as we have been in j the other years when the game some-1 times went hard against us.' "And we extend to Mrs. Cox and the members of the governor's family tiie same hearty felicitations. Dayton we know, is proud of this new distinction. We know Ohio is. When everybody in the United States knows as much about Gov. James M. Cox as those who know him best and appreciate his thorough honesty and high purpose in public life, we seem to catch a vision of tlie White House, with the 'Chief there. Editor County Record: It has come to my healing that quite a number of people are blaming J. N. Hammet, County Supervisor, for the bad condition of {he roads and bridges in the County, and for the clearing and cutting of timber along some of the public roads by the chain gang. This is placing blame on a man who is not responsible for it. Thinking people ought to think more, and remember that the County Government was changed about eight years ago, and the supervision of roads and bridges was taken out of the hands of a supervisor and placed in the hands of a road engineer, then an elective office, (since an appointive). Since then this responsibility 1 as been delegated to five County Commissioners, appointed, and the Road Engineer, the Supervisor's duties being defined, makes him absolutely the clerk. Mr. Haramct has had the training and makes an excellent clerk, and I do not like to see an injustice done a painstaking and efficient officer, as he has proven himself to be. I might further say that the County Commissioners and Road Engineer are doing all in their power for the benefit of roads and bridges. VOTER.
