Before the hour for the dinner recess this case had been disposed of and the first Federal Court for the Eastern district of South Carolina had adjourned. This morning conditions were vastly different. Long before ten o'clock the court room was crowd ed with jurors ana witnesses, atiuineys and court officials, revenue officers and State officers, and every now and then there appeared in the crowd a defendant fortunate enough to have been released on bond for his appearance at this term of court And as to the number of cases awaiting trial, thft District Attorney reported v.. In addition to this 65 indictments were handed to the grand jury j to be passed upon. The growth in the j Court in this district was remarked i upon by many in the court room,! among whom there were several who I sat in the audience when the first court was held in Florence." o When Fred Smith of Gilsum, N.
