THE KELLER A Valuable Communit] leviation of That the progress and development . of any community is predicted in no small measure upon the physical well Wing of its individual members is a statement of such obvious truth that no demonstration is necessary to establish its accuracy. A recognition of this fact lead Dr. Edward Theron Kelly several years ago to conceive ?f a local institution to be devoted to :he preservation of neaitn ana ine alleviation of human suffering, and the Kelly Sanitorium, which opened its doors for the reception of patients on March 1st, last, is an impressive realization of his conception. Dr. Kelly's faith in the undertaking has been fully vindicaed by the wide fpread interest and support which his venture has enlisted among those whom he purposed and is serving. From the opening date up until the time this article is written?December 8,?415 patients have entered the sanitarium, 141 for operations and 274 for treatment. The mortality rate, it should be remarked to the credit of Dr. Kelly and his collaborators- is unusually low and augurs well for the future accomplishment of the institution. Facing academy street in the heart of the town, the handsome 26 room building which houses the hospital is well calculated to arrest the attention of the passerby and to excite his or her interest.' Flanked on each side by ycamore trees, surrounded by broad verandas and with the hedged lawn a carpet of verdant greenness, it suggests, as the accompanying illustration shows, a well environed home rather than a hospital. This is but one of the many attributes which makes the Kelly Sanitorium the paragon of many in its class, as we shall endeavor to show in the coarse of this article. This spirit is best interpreted by a placard which is conspicuously posted in the reception room bearing tho legend "A Hospital is a Hotel for the Sick," an avowal whose application one observes in the treatment accorded the "guests" and the provision made for their com* l | lurv. I All of the rooms have an outside j exposure with an abundance of light j jand fresh air. The rooms themselves are unusually large- with walls and ceiling of each done in tints that harmonize with the furnishings. Each P [ loom is equipped with hot and cold j running water and is heated by steam ! rad'ators. A diet kitchen?adjunct! to the main kitchen on the first floor ! ?ami a bathroom is located on each ' floor, all of which are of ready access by electric elevator and communication by telephone. Through and ingenious device, ventilation of the entire building "was effected by Reaving an aperture between the slats covering the under side of the eaves, thus allowing air to circulate between the J ceiling and the roof, from whence it! is conducted by means of an opening | in the garret to the floor beneath. j Four bed rooms are located on the j first floor, with doors opening into a hallway* which leads from the reception room to the rear of the building. Immediately behind these rooms are the main dining room, where food is prepared for all patients, the butler's pantry and the kitchen. One is im-| pressed at every step with the fitting orderliness of what he observes on his' tour- due atention having been given j to the minutest details. At a public linen shower tendered Dr. Kelly and his co-workers at the opening of the institution, linen goods to the value of $800 were presented to the hospital by the people of Williamsburg County. The Mehodist Sunday schools have placed Bibles in each room.
