CHAPEL FAVORED BY LEGION Memorial to State's Dead Strongly Indorsed by Veterans Columbia, Nov. 12.?Following a t somewhat extended debate the initial annual convention of the American Legion of South Carolina which met in the hall of the House of Representatives, by an almost unanimous vote I rejected a resolution, introduced by J. Hertz Brown, a delegate from Spartunburg, providing for a memorial hospital, commemorative to those South Carolinians in the service of the nation who made the supreme sacrifice in the world war, instead of the memorial chapel provided by an, act of the General Assembly. Subseauentlv another resolution | endorsing a non-utilitarian building' or monument a* a fitting memorial was adopted by the convention. The hospital resolution asked the General Assembly to make the necea- i sary amendment in the existing law, so that the utilitarian building instead of the memorial chapel be built. The resolution said that the building, if the General Assembly was favorably disposed toward the idea "shall be a great memorial hospital where suffer- { ing may be relieved, disease eradi-; cated and the citizens of this State j made more fit for her service." Act of General Assembly?The last session of the General Assembly passed the act providing for the erection of the memorial chapel on the ground owned by the University of South ; Carolina. The measure carried an ap- j propriation of $100,000 with the stipulation that it was to be augmented by public subscription from among the citizens of the State. Itis a created commission, of which Governor Cooper is chairman, and ex-Governor Manning, vice-chairman, to carry on 1 the campaign and provide for the ; ? Alraost from the first meeting of: the commission, opposition to the idea of non-utilitarian building was expressed. A campaign bolstered by a deal of publicity, has been waged bringing to the fore the hospital idea, the underlying plea being that the ex-soldiers wanted something which' would be of service jnstead of orna- J ments, by which their fallen comrades i would remembered. A petition was i ^Tifcsented to the memorial commission 1 asking for consideration of the hospital idea, but the commission took the positiono that the Legislature had spoken and it was mandator}* upon it under the act to go on with the original project for a memorial shapel. So the solicitation for funds was commenced on September 29th. Indifference Explained?The campaign for subscriptions "has met with indifFerent success since the "drive" began, thought principally to be due to the propaganda in favor of the hospital project. However, the friends of the present memorial chapel idea are now confident that the solicitation for funds will take on an impetus as the voice of the South Carolina world war veterans, the American Legion, they contend, has spoken for it and has demonstrated what the wishes of the ex-soldiers are. o CORPORATORS NOTICE Take notice, that pursuant to a commission issued by the Honorable W.
