Ai; (?h t> Preachers Ask Higher Pay Ohio ministers of practically ail denomination^ have launched a campaign for a minimum salary of at east $1,2(10 a yeai. They're tired of trying to live on Jess than that, they i say. It can't be done in these days of high prices, and it's up to church I congregations to realize it, they de! clare. J The higher salary movement perI haps will be pushed most vigorously r>y Methodist Episcopal ministers. The Rev. L. 1. Hart, field secretary of the endowment fund of the Ohio conference, has charge of a campaign to raise $250,000 for payment of pensions to aged and oiabled ministers and their families. To date $146,000 has been subscribed. But it's the preacher still in harness, and those who are just starting on their ministerial careers, who are pressing claims, irrespective of the endowment fund. It will take care of thern, in a limited way, when they quit preaching, but meanwhile?they must live, they say. The cost of living has gone up 70 I per cent in the past five years, Mr. i Hat! says. Meanwhile, the average | salary of Methodist ministers has J been boosted only 14 per cent. On the average a Methodist pastor has had only a $25 increase in salary ; since 1914. In the Methodist Episco' pal churches, North and South, it is i figured that 1,300 or one out of every 16 ministers, receive $300 a year or less. Four hundred dollars is an average for 2,308. The average of all Methodist ministers, including the - Southern church, is $600, according to Mr. Hart. Rural pastors and those of small churches in cities are hardest hit by the present salary scale, j he says. Pastors of all denominations are unanimous in declaring that prospect of low salaries is keeping* thousands of desirable young men out of the ministry.?Ohio State Journal.
