A race riot broke out in Knoxville, Tenn., Saturday as a result of the storming of the county jail by a mob intent upon lynching a negro, Maurice Mayes, for the murder of a white woman. Two are reported as having been killed in the riot with a much larger number injured. A large military and police force succeeded in quieting the situation Sunday.
