FATE OF ELEPHANTS |S HANGS IN BALANCE * va MAY GO WAY OF BUFFALOES te AND BECOME NEARLY EN- be TINCT? DRIVE IN AFRICA ? Will the famous African ehphant soon be as nearly extinct as is the an buffalo of the American plains? ha Cable dispatches stavo that the ^ South African Cape Council has de- .. tided to exterminate elephants, which 1 are regarded as a menace to the or fanners whose crops they despoil and It whose employees they sometimes k0 kfll ha Sir Harry Johnston, famous African authority, tells of his experience ^ with African elephants in a commu- an nication to the National Geographic crt Society which is quoted in a bulletin from the society as follows: g "If after many years of trial the African elephant is pronounced to be eg hopeless as a domestic animal (and ki! it should be remembered that most male African elephants in captivity have shown themselves to be hopeless savage then at least for its magnificent ivory the creature is worth preserving as an asset to the State. If the Indian elephant shows m< Jiimself to be more docile than the ha African elephant, it must be remem- Xh bered, on the other hand, that he is of very little value for his ivory. p "One day a baby elephant was pre- ele sented to me by an Uganda chief. It on is a sad thing to relate, but three su] men were killed in attempting to 0ti capture the first elephant. I had ex- . pressed a wish one day for some eleJ I u'r plants to experiment witn in aomes- tication, and the natives, with their sec usual desire to please me, were so op, ardent in their determination togratify my wish and so determined in ' their pursuit of the young elephant *a tint the mother elephant knocked aver and killed three of them. But ? finally they succeeded in their object, og capturing the calf, and to my great SB surprise it trotted into camp behind ||? one of the men. M This little creature at the time saj only four feet high. In two days it |? had become perfectly tame, and would follow a human being as read- jgg By as his own mother. It was easy &? enough to feed him with milk, because all that was required was a jg5 bottle with a long neck. This bottle was filled with cow's milk diluted gjgi with water, and poured down the ??! elephant's throat Soon all that one had to do was to place the neck of gg the bottle in the elephant's mouth, and the intelligent creature wound Kg its trunk around the neck of the bot- $3 tie, tilted it up, and absorbed the contents. For several weeks the elephant throve and became a most delightful pet It would allow any one tp to ride on its back, and seemed to take pleasure and amusement in this ?? exercise. It would find its way || through diverse passages into my sitting-room, not upsetting or injur- S ing anything, but deftly smelling || and examining objects of curiosity with its trunk. ?5 "At the same time we had in cap- W. tivity a young zebra, which was also g to be the pioneer of a domesticated striped horse. These two orphans, |g bo olontiant anrl fho roKra hprjiTn p K greatly attached to each other, though perhaps there was more enthusiastic affection on the part of || the elephant, the zebra at times get- gg ting a little bored with constant emr M braces. Alas and alack! both ele- || phant and zebra died eventually gg from the unwholesomeness, to them, j?? of cow's milk. ?| "Several other elephants of the gg aame age?that is to say, abontfoor 8$ to six months old?were delivered into my hands, but all eventually ?| died. Cow's milk appears to give these |S creatures eventually an incurable, ftg diarrhea, while all attempts at that jg early age to substitute for milk fari- |S naceous substances have also result- ?g ed in a similar disease. I do not say E that it is impossible to rear young 8g elephants by hand for we have not g| made a sufficient number of experi- || meats, but it is very difficult I &? therefore favor the plan of attempt- |g ing to catch elephants of perhaps a ge year old, at which age they do not |? require milk as an exclusive diet One specimen of this age was caught g?3 n/l Mndilv tamitfl nnH for auffht I ra I know is stili'alive in captivity.8|j Youth Kills? His Brother Buster Cooker, eight years of age || of Woodruff, Spartanburg county || was lodged in the county jail last pj Friday on a charge of having shot and instantly killed his little five year old brother Wednesday night. The two boys were alone in their i 2$ aunt's home, other members of the ||j family having gone to church and jss the young Fred Cooker dashed a || glass of water into his brother's face 83 while asleep, the older boy was eg awakeped and it is believed crawled up stairs into an attic securing a ? single barrelled shot gun with which Eg he almost completely blew his little brother's head off, it is stated. Responsibility for the crime was fixed upon Buster Cooker by the cor- || oner's inquest ?& ????
