John F. McFadden left on Wednesday

expects to spend sometime at Lake
Junuluska before returning to Kingstree.

An electrical storm and cloud burst <
visited Florence yesterday afternoon
and in a short time practically flooded
parts of the town. The McLeod :;
infirmary was struck by lightning.' 1
but fortunately only slight damage
resulted. ]
Mr. Edward McDowell has gone
to Greenville to accept a position on
the staff of the Daily News of that
city. Mr. McDowell recently graduated
from Furman University and
having had some experience in news- 11
paper work, we feel sure he will
make cood.
Mr. G. F. Ogilvie, representing
the Timber and Tie department of
the Atlantic Coast Line Co., with 1
headquarters at Wilmington, N. C.
was here Monday on duty connected;
with his department. A letter by ,
Mr. Ogilvie on the cross tic sit iation
will be found elsewhere in this paper.

COTTON MEETING TUSEDAY
Hon. B. F. McLeod Will Be Present
To Address Farmers
Hon. B. F. McLeod, state manager,
South Carolina Cotton association,
will be in Kingstree on Tuesday
August 12, to meet with and address
the county and township committeemen,
farmers, merchants, bankers
and prospective members of the association
on the objects and purposes
of the cotton association.
The meeting will be held at the
court house Tuesday at 12 o'clock.

Early in the day indications pointed
to the largest tobacco sale ever
made in Kingstree in one day. When
the sale started at Nelson's warehouse
this morning the floor was
well filled and the street in front of
the warehouse was crowded with
wagons. Conditions were practically
the same at Gorrell's and at the two
Hampton street warehouses.

The five lots in Kingstree sold at
public auction Monday in front of
the court house in foreclosure proceedings
brought a substantial price
and wgre purchased, one by Mr.
David Silverman, two by W. N. Jacobs
and W. R. Scott and two by
Toney Chandler. The lots are located
on the west side of town in what is
known as the "Roost" section.

Democratic Club Organized
At a citizens meeting held in the
court house last Friday night, The
Kingstree Democratic Club was reorganized.
Officers of the club were
chosen as follows:
\Y. H. Welch, president; F. W.
Fairy, vice-president, J. D. Britton,
secretary.
Executive committee: A. C. Hinds,
Thos. McCutchen. M. A. Shuler, R.
B. Smith, and Donald Montgomery.
Registration committee: J. F.
Scott, C. C. Burgess and A. M. Gor
don.
On the motion of A. C. Hinds the
Rules of the State Temocratic primary
with such changes as will suit
local conditions were adopted.
Owing to the rain only a few people
were present.

Enjoyable Entertainment
The Ladies Bible class of the Baptist
church were charmingly entertained
at the home of Mrs. Bessie
Steele last Friday night from 9 "0
11 o'clock. The guests were entertained
with a guessing contest, "A
Romance of the Baptist Ccurch"
which is given below in its entirety.
The words in quotations were blank
and had to be filled in by the guests.
They are nouns representing the
names of various members of the
church:
A Romance of The Baptist Church
Some years ago, near an old mill
stream, there lived a "Brown" eyed
maid whose father was a "Miller".
N'ot far away there lived an old
la<jy "Ander-son. This son sang as
sweetly as a "Byrd" and was known
far and wide as an accomplished
"Harper". Often in the evening, he
would "Steele" to the maid's window
and sing love songs. This enraged
the old man who was a "Wise" man
but rather severe. Once he heard the
maid exclaim. Oh! you are a "Deery"
and he became so angry, he threw a
huee "China" dish at the lover. The
young man exclaimed "That "Shuler"
"Nettles" me", but his love was
so "Strong" he was willing to "Gamble"
for another chance. Fortunately
this time "Tru-luck" was with him
as the old man had gone on a "Jurnigan"
to St "Lewis". The next day
the church bell was rung by the
"Sexton" and there was a hasty
wedding. The young couple spent
their honey-moon at "Sullivan's"
Island and their life was like a
"Christmas" "Holliday" ever after.
Cream and cake were served at
the close of the contest.
