Mr. Root appeared before it yesterday and told the committee he got it from Henry P. Davis, a member of the Morgan banking house and head of the Red Cross and Mr. Davis in turn testified that it was given him in Faris by Thomas W. Lamont, who is attached to the American peace commission. Mr. Davis said [he "got the copy to clear up the status of the Red Cross under the [league of nations and never had used it in a fiaancia' way. He had shown it to no one except Mr. Root, and he sent it to him because he knew the former Secretary was being consulted by the American mission." Cut high grass and rank growths of weeds. Clean up all the tin cans and any other receptacles that might hold stagnant water and make a breeding place for mosquitoes. Let every business man see that, back lots are free of litter, both for the sake of cleanliness and health and as a prevention against fire. Let everj- citizen refrain from throwing waste of any kind upon streets and sidewalks. I ' o Governor Cooper has respited the sentence of James Allen, Sr., a negro who was convicted in Lancaster County of the murder of Brown Simpson, a white man, on August 4, 1918, and sentenced for electrocution. Allen was to have died last Friday, but the Governor held up the execution of his sentence until his case could be investigated by the board of pardons. He was scheduled to have died at the State penitentiary, but he was never sent there.
