RED CROSS NOTES
Public Health Nurse Begins Her
Wofk
Miss Martha Gordon, public health 1
nurse, has entered upon her duties
with wonderful energy and enthusi- (
asm. She is busy every day visiting
different sections of Williamsburg
county, investigating conditions in
various communities, informing phy- (
sicians and citizens of her appoint- ,
ment as county Red Cross nurse, and
arganfeing the work along all lines.
Dn last Wednesday. Miss Gordon
made a trip to Florence to confer
with a nurse who had had expe- (
rience in communitv work, and
she secured the services of this '
nurse, Mrs. Hessie Mouzon, to Assist
in organizing the work through^

out this county, un .Oiliuiuaj mm
two workers in the cause of public
lealth made an 80 mile trip, visitin?
the resident physicians and postmasters
at Rome. Hemingway, John-!
sonville. Henry, Fowler, and Indian- i
town; also visited one patient who j
will later be sent to the hospital. I'
found several homes where there had j
been small-pox and scarlet fever, |
and no subsequent fumigation; here i
she gave out sulpher candles and in-,
structions in use of same. On Mon-1
day a trip was made to the Cades
section, and on Wednesday the needs
of the Salters, Lanes, Gourdin and
Greelyville communities were investigated
and lines of sen-ice mapped
out.
The physicians everywhere are ,
highly in favor of this new work being
under taken by the Red Cross,
as thev know thai the community

nurse will fill a long ieu neeu. 1 unpeople
of Williamsburg county should
also heartily support it, and should
make their support evident by joining
the local Red Cross chapter.
There ought to be at least 20,000
members in the Kingstree chapter,
but there are actually only about
1,100. You men and women whose
names are not down on our roll, are
you not ashamed to be outside of
such a splendid organization? Do
you not wish to have a personal
part in all the beautiful charity work
abroad and the excellent constructive
work at home, done by the A. R.
C. You people who are not, members
already, bring your dollar to Mrs.
A. C. Hinds, secretary, and join at
once.
Mrs. Peter G. Gourdin,

TO OPEN TUESDAY
The New Picture Show House To
Present Annette Kellermann t
Kingstree has been withoat a <
moving picture show since the ?
t'wana went out of commission by k
fire.
Mr. J. C. Thompson realizing the j
need of a moving picture show house
in the town busied himself in rees- *
tablishing the amusement. He has \
had .-fitted out for the purpose a ;
large store room on West Academy
street where the first show will be
given next Tuesday night April 1, c
featuring Annette * Kellermann, the 2
million dollar beauty, or the world's t
most perfect specimen of womanhood.
1
Mr. Thompson has gone to consid- (
erable expense in placing a moving (
picture show at the pleasure of our citizens
and it is only fair to pat- j
ronize the place in such a way as will J t
at least cover rent and running ex-11
pcnses. We know that heretofore o
this has barely, if at all been the r
case.
The new house is so arranged T
that no one need be afraid of fire. 3
Ample exits are provided and the j
machine and operating booth is located
at the rear of the auditorium '
Mr. H. C. Crawford, an experienc- I
ed moving picture man, will be in
charge. This fact alone practically
insures safety and satisfaction to f
patrons. (

Fire at District Parsonage
The district parsonage of the
Methodist church, was discovered to
be on fire about 3 o'clock last Sunday
afternoon and, but for the
prompt work of the local fire fight- I
ers would probably have been bum- !
ed to the ground. j
The parsonage is occupied by the j
Rev. D. A. Phillips, presiding elder j
of the district. He was. as Ls usual j
on Sunday away from home. Mrs. j
Phillips and other members of the j
family were in the house when the j
fire or smoke was discovered eminat- j
ing from the roof. The fire originat- j
ed the attic of one of the back j
rooms. Some damage was done to j
the building and also to the furnish- j

W. 0. W. INSURANCE GOES UP
Increased to Meet Death Rate From
Influenza
Chicago, March 26.?More than a
million members of the Modern
Woodmen of America, the largest
fraternal insurance organization in
the country, had their rates increased
today to meet the abnormal death
losses resulting from the influenza
epidemic, which caused a reduction
in the beneficiary fund of the order
from $12,000,000 to $700,000.
On the present membership the
increase is a flat advance of 50 per
cent "and all new members joining
hereafter will have to pay material
ly increased rates.
Even this increase is said to be not
a strictly actuarial adesuate rate,
I but it was as far as the membership
could be induced to go at this time.
The action was taken today at a
special meeting of the head camp of
the order, after three day's debate.
