Caldwell, 457 I Vast m Si lllHMMimmRnEiDnsif' What Does It Mean? Coincident with the splendid service being rendered by thousands of dogs in this great war, there has suddenly appeared, both in England and this country, a strange outbreak of hostility toward the dog. Not a few individuals, and many newspapers, arc disclosing their total inability to appreciate what "the friendship and companionship of the dog has meant to mankind t from time immemorial. There is a clamor for his destruction. Now he is the chief cause of the decline in sheep raising. Now he is the fatal carrier of disease germs. Now he is the annual consumer of millions of dollars' worth of food. What crimes remain to be charged against him we do not know. But those who know him need not fear that at this late day mankind is suddenly awakening to the fact that, in the dog, it has been cherishing a foe in its own household. There are those of us who, if we had our choice, would prefer to spend our eternity with certain dogs we have known than with many a human being it has been our lot to meet. Before he turned his attention to navigation by steam, Kobert Fulton invented a marine torpedo which he endeavored to dispose of to the United States government. Suev x x: t ceeciing in interesting dtuueb .uauison, then secretary of state, in the matter, he obtained a small appropriation from the government for -? the purpose of conducting some public experiments. In the summar of 1806 he invited the high dignitaries and a number of prominent citizens of New York to Governors island to see the torpedoes and machinery with which his experiments were to be made. While he was lecturing on his . blank torpedoes, which were large, empty copper cylinders, his numerous auditors crowded around him. After awhile he turned to a copper case of the same description which was placed under the gateway of old Castle William, and to which was attached a clockwork lock. Drawing out a peg Fulton set the clock in motion, and then he said in solemn tones to his attentive audience: "Gentlemen, this is a charged torpedo, with which, precisely in ita present state, I mean to blow up a vessel. It contains 170 pounds of rninnnir^np on/1 if T TVPr#> STlffpf SUU^VTIUW) UUU JA ? .. ie clockwork to run fifteen minutes I have no doubt that it would blow this fortification to atoms/' The circle of humanity which had closed around the inventor began to spread out and grow thinner, and before five of the fifteen minutes had passed there were but two or three persons remaining under the gateway. Some, indeed, lost no time in getting at the greatest possible distance from the torpedo, and they did not again appear on the ground until they were assured that the engine of destruction was safely lodged in the magazine whence it had been taken. The local historian of that period remarks: "The conduct of Mr. Fulton's auditors was not very extraordinary or unnatural, but his own composure indicated the confidence with which he handled these terrible instruments of destruction and the reliance he had on the accuracy of the performance of his machinery. The apprehension of his friends surprised and amused him, and he took occasion to remark how true it was that fear frequently arose from ignorance." Diminutiv* Aztecs. The feminine direct descendants of the famous Aztecs are tiny creatures, exquisitely formed and refined in feature. They carry the head with the upbearing grace of the full blooded Indian : their skite are not red, but a clear, smooth copper color that shines like gold in the sun; .their hair is coarse and black as ebony, and they are deoorated with bright feathers tnd gay ornaments. These women make the most wonderfnl pottery that comes to us from Mexico, lor uior hare kept the old Aztec forme salt decorations in their art, and they also weave wonderful baskets and do exquisite embroidery. The strings of blue beads that the modern girl dons to ward off bronchitis are merely new versions of the strings of blue beads worn in Egypt 1.000 years before Chriat to keep diseases of the chest at bay, says a writer in the Philadelphia North American. The tiny sealed bottle of mercury which she carried to ward off rheumatics had its prototype in bottles of a strange elixir used in India thirty centuries and more ago. For Wholesale Fishermen. An editor of a .Jer.spv newspaper, a thorough sportsman, is said to have received this query from a reader: "Please advise me haw to dynamite a stream." The newspaper man sent the following advice: 'Four sticks of dynamite are sufficient. Tie them securely around your neck, attach fuse, lift it and run as fast as you can awav from the water to avoid injuring the other snakes and reptiles."?Argonaut. A Narrow Escapa.
