Williamsburg Soldier Describes Lights sad Shadows of Military Service. Editor County Record: Will you allow me space in your grand old paper to express my thoughts and to say something of the experience I have had in the army. We boys have had an awful though time; making long hikes in the cold, snowy weather, but I am sure it will make a man of you if it don't kill you. The physical exercise that we take is very b eneficial to us and we take it every day. The first thing: in the morning: is reveille; that must be met by every soldier and rook. For this we have to be in line at six fifteen, and standing at attention. The next formation is for mess, and a mess is what we get for breakfast. The next thing on the programme is "police," which means that all the match sticks, cigarette buts, waste paper and all trash must be picked up. Then drill call i9 sounded at eight o'clock and we grab our guns and side arms and away we go to the drill held, and there is where we catch it. It is squads right and squads left and forward, march, until eleven-twenty, then we come into camp and eat dinner at twelve a'aIabI "tv\Uao" ncrflin nf tnrplvp. U VIVWIh| |TVIIWV MV forty-five, fall in again at one o'clock for drill. We drill then until fourthirty. come into camp again and stand retreat at five o'clock while the band plays the Star Spangle I Banner. When this formation is ' over we have made one great big dollar. I want to giye the boys that are coming to camp about the 15th of February a little warning about their corns and ingrowing toenails, for the first thing will be a little tight uniform and a little hike of about fifteen miles without anything to eat. Lake City, January 29:?Mr Robt H McElyeen, who for several years ! has been cashier of the Farmers' and Merchants' Bank of Johnsonville, has enlisted in the millitary service. The February call for soldiers will almost clear Lake City of young men, as there have been so many volunteers from this town. Mr Gravely, who, some time ago volunteered in the aviation service, has received orders to report. The firm of W T Askins and Co has sold out to Messrs Fred any Jim Rollins. Mrs J D Eaddy, whose husband is in the hospital corps at Fort Oglethorpe, is at present in Lake City, where she thinks she may make her home. Mr H C Fulmore has sold out his interest in the H C Fulmore Co, and has moved to Rocky Mount, N C. Miss Ola Coward has given up her position with Joyner and uo to ac cept one with the railroad company at this place. Box Party at Martin School. Everyone invited to come and bring a box. ltp Aerial Activity on British Front There was great aerial activity on the British front in France Saturday and Saturday night, when the British airmen accounted for six*, teen hostile airplanes and themselves lost only one machine, which was reported missing. CONSERVATION OF FOODSTUFFS. PLAN URGED BY WILLIAM ELLIOTT, FOOD ADMINISTRATOR FOR SOUTH CAROLINA. The programme for the conservation of food is outlined in a supplemental home card which is soon to be distributed by the United States food administration for South Carolina. William Elliott, food administrator, is planning to have one of these cards placed in every one of the 800,000 homes of the State. Arrangements are also being made for the distribution of 800,000 leaflets: "Do you know Com Meal?" and 300,000 of the leaflets: "Do you know Oat Meal?" These leaflets are issued in an effort to have the people use more substitute products for wheat. The leiflets contain a number of valuable recipes. One meatless day?Tuesday?in every week, and one meatless meal every day. Two porkless days?Tuesday and Saturday^in every week. Make every day a sugar-saving day. Use more fruit, vegetables and potatoes. More than 100.000 Momes in South Carolina have already signed the pledge card of the United States food administration. In the new campaign an effort will be made to increase the number of signers to 300,000. All householders who have not signed the pledge card should communicate with the Food Administration, Arcade Building, Columbia, S C. The people of the State are urged by the home supplemental card to trade with the merchants displaying the poster bearing the emblem of the food administration. They are also urged to patronize the restaurants who are observing the rules of the food administration. The home supplemental card contains specific directions for food conservation as authorized by the United States food administration. Our problem is to feed the allies and our own soldiers abroad by * ii 1- # 3 sending mem as mucn ioou no wo can of the most concentrated nutritive value in the least shipping space. These foods are wheat, beef, pork, butter and sugar. Our solution is to eat less of these and a a little of all foods as will support health and strength. All saving counts for victory. Local and Personal from Hemingway. Hemingway,January 28:?MrRN Speigner and Miss Eizabeth Speigner spent the week end at their home in Kingstree. Mr and Mrs P B Thorn and Miss Selma Thorn were called down to Hemingway this week to the bedside of Miss Rubie Thorn, who is ill with pneumonia. Private Ebbie Cribb of Camp Sevier was called home last week on account of the death of his grandmother. Misa Elise Rollins spent the weekend at her home at Indiantown. Cadet Eugene Huggins left Monday to resume his studies atClemson college. Mrs R J McCabe of Kingstree is a visitor in town this week. The Union High school presented the play "Somewhere in France" here Friday night. It was quite s success and much enjoyed by all who attended.
