Before another issue of The Record is published there will have been held a nominating primary for the election of a Mayor, Aldermen and one member or the Public Works ! Commission for the town of Kingstree. In this issue will be found i the names of those who are offering themselves for these several posi-1 tions?all of whom are well known j citizens. Others may enter the race before the campaign comes to a close. As has already been pointed out in these columns, Kingstree is an - important town. It's business interests have increased tremendously in the past few years, and are growing larger as the days come. The tobacco market alone, within the short space of forty-five days, brought a million dollars to our ? ?T""> finp nf pcupic. 1IIC 3WIHJ lUWtvov vuv V the town's jewels?is beckoning for a strong hand and a steady guide. The educational life demands protection, as it seeks to unfold the possibilities of posterity. Religious and fraternal interests are praying for sympathetic authority that will make easier their path.and their progress more substantial. The civic and i economic welfare turns for relief | to those who handle the town's, finances. [ 'Tis true that by comparison with former years there are many im-j provements, but among these one, cannot help but notice in some in- j stances, a lack of permanency. The bi-annual election furnishes an opportunity for the citizens to register their approval, their protests and their demands. Those selected for directing the town's affairs should i be able to read from the ballots the wishes of the people, and should not hesitate in becoming obedient servants. It is incumbent upon the voter, however, to pool the candidates in such a manner as to produce cooperative power and united effort, which can come only through a body of Councilmen selected by reason of their fitness, ability, broadness, sincerity and usefulness?and a willingness to disagree and work on when unanimous agreement becomes impossible. In casting our ballots let's remember that it's not for a motive political, personal, friendly, financial, or any other except from purest purpose to install a set of officers who will exercise character, thrift, economy; and who will unite their efforts is one man for the betterment, and preservation of the town's ideals. Clean Up Back Lots. It has been called to our attention by the town authorities that many of the back lots in the business and residential sections of the town are Ilthy, full of boxes, paper, excelsior, tin cans, etc. This matter has been called to the attention of the citizens many times through the columns of The Record, but without much effect. 4, A clean town as a rule is a healthy Cowb, and it is our duty as citizens to keep our premises clean of tin cans, standing weeds, and such other refuse as is allowed to accumulate, and thus prevent disease breaking out. We should consider this condition not from a health standpoint alone, but also from the standpoint of fire. The cleaner we keep our premises, especially in the business district, the less chance there ~ ?iMif Ann roocnn I IS oi lire ure?tuij& uui. v??. . why the fire insurance rates are so high throughout the country is because so much waste material is allowed to accumulate, making a good place for the casually thrown lighted cigarette stump to do its costly work. Pride in the appearance of our business places, front and rear, I " i should also prompt us to keep neat premises. Some citizens have complained that the town carts fret around so' seldom that it is hard to fret the waste material off of their lots after j it is piled up for them. The reason ; the carts are slow in making their j rounds is because they have to spend j on nuiph timp rtninor tho vcnrk the I business men ought to do themselves. Mr Business Man. it is not the duty of the town to clean up your premises. If you will clean them up and put the trash convenient 'for the carts to get, the service given by the town force will be much better. We urge that every citizen see to it that his premises are cleaned up at once, and thus help beautify our town. It will be a splendid advertisement for Kingstree. With this issue The Record is starting a series of articles gotten out by the United States department of agriculture on wheat. The article in this paper deals with the importance of good seed. Next week's article will teH how to prevent rust or mould; the third article mill slaol with tkio nrpnnrntinn nf the soil or seed bed. These articles should be of interest to every farmer in this county, es.oocially those who raise wheat, and a help to those who may commence its cultivation this fall. And in view of the unprecedented conditions brought about by the war we, as well as the department of agriculture, urge every farmer to plant wheht enough at least for his own bread. The tobacco crop in Horry county this year brought $2,750,000, or a quarter of a million more than the i assessed value of all the realty in the "independent republic." A campaign to increase the con* sumption of sea food to save meat has been begun by the national food administration. At the funeral of Virginia Hicks, a member of Rev W A Fairy's congregation at Laurens, Tuesday, an American flag was planted at the head of her grave. The child had made this request in her last sickness, as a witness of her patriotism. Rev Watson T Simms, pastor of a rnlnrpd church at York, was beaten to death one night last week by a mob. thought to have been composed largely of members of his congregation. There had been ill feeling between Simms and his church, and revenge no doubt prompted the deed. CAR LOADS.
