World-Conquering Habit. It is no longer true that chewing gum is a habit peculiar to the United i States. It is now reported that European, Asiatic, and even African jaws , j have been set to work and are inJ creasingly busy. American chewing ! gum has followed the flag to Hawaii, j ! n J a I. nL.M! t T i. i ranama ana me rninppines. it is found under Chinese labels; it has made its way into every South American port; it has invaded the interior of Africa and reached the South Sea Islands. It may not yet be employed as a means to help fill the aching void left by short rations in Germany, but it i is known to have become a popular | refreshment throughout the length j of the trenches of the allies. It pro j vides no real nourishment and drains j too much saliva into the stomach when it is chewed more than fifteen or twenty minutes at a time?and it is generally kept in the mouth much longer than that?butitseemstofurnish a balm for strained nerves and a vent for restlessness. Its friends claim that it is an aid to digestion, as well. In fact, this contention is quite generally sustained by medical authorities. An unsightly habit it is, especially on the part of a girl orwoman, and of more that doubtful utility it may be, but it goes steadily on its world-conquering way. In 1914 France imported only $736 worth of American chewing gum, and England only $90,183 worth, but during the first nine months of this fiscal yeai France's purchases amounted to $90,201, and England's to $582,294?a vast increase said to be due to the comfort and enjoyment that our chewing gum has carried to the long Allied battle line. More than a million dollars worth of this American commodity will reach foreign countries before the end of this \ear, and a doubling of exports is expected for next year. When aroused prohibitionists and "reformers" add to it their outlawed list, as they have pretty nearly everywhere else under the sun, thus advertising it the more, foreign consumption of this confection will doubtless increase yet more rapidly. ?Ex.
