ERADICATE THE CATTLE TICK. The Greatest Foe against which Southern Cattle Raisers Have to Contend. Washington, June 5:?Tick eradi- i cation should be given hn important place among the measures to be ta-! ken by Southern communities to i ? A ? : meet exisungconuiuuns. .m increased supply of meats is one of thecoun try's most urgent needs; and the South cannot do its 9hare toward furnishing this increased meat supply until the tick has been put out of the way. It is proved every day in the South tbat beef cattle that are being robbed of blood by ticks will not grow or fatten properly, and that milch cows subject to tne same arain give ; ollly scanty supplies of milk. They j cannot efficiently turn into food for j soldiers and civilians the hundreds of 11 pounds of grass,hay and grain which ; they consume. They are wasters? | made so by the ticks that feed on them, i These are animals which live in . spite of the cattle fever germs which ( ticks inject with their bitea. There | is the added loss to be charged 1 against ticks of the cattle which die j J from fever;and their number reaches inio the thousands. Now that each pound of meat and each glass of milk takes on an added value among the nation's resources, more cattle must be raised and each I. animal must be made to put on as j } great a weight of meat or yield asi much milk, as is economically prac-1, ticable. If this is to be accomplished i < in the South the first step must be a drive against ticks. The methods for , getting rid of these expensive pests j are well known, and are already being made efficient use of in many t Southern communities. Dipping vats ] tilled with solutions that will destroy J the ticks on cattle, and public inter-! est which will insist that all cattle be dipped, are the essentials; and when these have been acquired in a community a new day for cattle produc- 1 tion is sure to dawn.
