k ? ; INCREASEACREAGE OF POTATOES. COST LESS TO PLANT ? PRODUCE MORE FOOD PER ACRE THAN IRISH POTATOES. Washington,May 8:?Seed to plant an acre of Irish potatoes cost about . ?40 this spring. Seed sweet potatoes : will not cost more than $4 per acre -v where vine cuttings taken from ear-1 ly-set plants are used. The \ield of! sweet potatoes per acre is usually | greater than that of Irish potatoes, j and as a food they are nutiitious.; Sweet potatoes can be grown through-! out the Southern States, and, of course, in certain other sections. Specialists in the U S Department of Agriculture are urging an increased acreage of this crop wherever it can be easily grown. Sweet potatoes, it is pointed out, are the South's chief instrument for a quick and effective increase of the food supply. Seed is plentiful; last year's crop was the second largest ever produced. By means of vine cuttings it is possible to plant almost unlimited areas of this crop and at the same time conserve the present -?r supply. That is,a farmer who wishes to plant ten acres will bed sed enoughsay 8 to 10 bushels-to get slips for one acre. Vine cuttings from this acre wauld plant many more acres, plantings being possible until the first of August in the lower South. This system.now widely used in the South, enables the utilization of land from which early potatoes, cabbage, and other truck crops have been taken. Sweet potatoes are not expensive | to grow. The main limiting factor to the production of vast quantities by this plan is labor. Yields from j fields set with vine cuttings are as j large as from plants grown from | slips. Thismethod has the further advantage of preventing the transfer of diseases which are carried on the tubers. ; The South doesn't need to learn how to grow sweet potatoes, the specialists point out. Farmers know how to produce large yields of this crop. But the farmer must be impressed with the necessity of increasing his acreage of this crop, and then, when harvest comes, to prevent the enormous loss from improper handling and storing. The best way to keep sweet potatoes is to store them in well-ventilated storage houses, not "dugouts". Storage houses should be made ready as soon as possible. In Farmers' bulletin 548, "Storing and Marketing Sweet Potatoes," in4 structions for building such houses and for converting old and unoccupied buildings are given. Smallest Salaried Official. Atlanta. May 4:- The Waycross city government has taken the bull * by the horns on the high cost of living, and has today the lowest salari ed city official in the world in the person of City Treasurer E A Stubbs, who gets the munificent sum of $1 per year. This means that Mr Stubbs gets a fraction less than one-third of a cent per day for his services 01 about two cents per week. He doesn't need the money?it wouldn't pay for shoe leather in walking to and from the office anyway?and has taken the job purely from civic patriotism, the dollar being tacked on to make the arrangement legal. May A verdict of guilty of murder was returned tonight in the case of Harry J Spanneil, charged with the killing of Lieut Col M C Butler. Punishment was fixed at five years' imprisonment. Spanned all but collapsed when the verdict was read. Counsel for the derense announced motion tor a new trial would be filed immediately and if it were not granted,an appeal would be taken. The plea for reversal. they said, would be based specifically upon the refusal of the court to sustain defense's plea of "former acquittal." Spannell was indicted at Alpine, Tex, for the alletred killing of his wife and Lieut Col Butler the night of July 20, 1916. The charge of killing his wife, Mrs Crystal Holland Spannell, was tried at San Angelo last February on a change of venue. Spannell was acquitted and the case against him for killing Col Butler was brought to Coleman county. The trial here began Monday, April 23. Spannell has been released on Dona. THE LIMA BEAN, A Very Profitable Food Crop for Man, Beast, and Soil. Few of us realize South Carolina's yearly importation of the common lima or butter bean, which will grow and produce to perfection in all sections of the State. In this crop, we readily recognize the three "F's" of successful and productive ! agriculture,?food for man, feed for domestic animal, and fertility for the soil; all of which are dependent one upon the other and of equal importance. On the eve of the present crisis, the farmers of the South could resort to no secondary food crop that offers a more promis j ing outlook, as the crop is easily grown, produces well, and furnishes wholesome food for both man and beast. This crop should occupy a place in every home garden, being used both in the fresh and the dry stages, and the present outlook in the shortage of food supply should be convincinging of the needs of more extensive plantings of this valuable food crop. Not unlike other crops of this family, the lima bean does well and produces to perfection on any well prepared garden or field soil; the requisites being the same as that of other beans. Like other beans, we have two types,?the bush, or dwarf, and the running, or pole. For extensive planting, the bush type is most dei eirflhlp hpincr nlantpd in rows thrpp feet apart and 8 to 10 inches in the drill and covered to a depted of 2 or 3 inches.
