SUBMARINE FIRES AT U. S. VESSEL NEAR AMERICAN COAST?TORPEDO MISSES ITS MARK BY ONLY THIRTY YARDS. Boston, April 17:?The war was brought to the shores of this country today, when the United States destroyer Smith reported by radio that an enemy submarine had tried unsuccessfully to torpedo her 100 miles south of New York at 3:30 this morning. Additional reports were received from the destroyer tonight and were forwarded to Washington. Nothing of an official nature regarding the additional reports was made public here. A suggestion in hipping circles that the lookout of the Smith had perhaps mistaken a large fish for a torpedo in the uncertain light of the early morning met with the reply that the Smith's officers "stood by their original statement." The Navy Department's version of the original statement was: "Reported from Fire Island lightship to the naval stations at Boston and New York at 3:30 a. m.. on the 17th, an enemy submarine was sighted by the U S S Smith, running apparently submerged. Submarine fired a torpedo at the U S S Smith, which missed her by thirty yards. The wake of the torpedo was plainly seen crossing the bow. Submarine disappeared." Whether the swift destroyer dashed fqjr the spot where the U boat was thought to be lurking was not made known by officers who had seen the Smith's report of the incident. Neither could it be learned here whether there was a chance for the Smith's quick firers to come into action. It was learned, however, that another destroyer passed near the position mentioned in the Smith's report without sighting anything unusual. NEWS FROM LAKE CITY. Wedding Bella?An Active Preparedness Movement-Baseball Again. Lake City, April 18:?Mr Reuben Prevattand Miss Laura May Rodgers were united in marriage"on the 11th instant, [the Rev E P Easterling, pastor of the Baptist church, performing the ceremony, which took place at the residence of Mr and Mrs R F Joyner, uncle and aunt of the bride. Miss Laura May is the only daughter of Mayor S B Rodgers. Mrs S M Sturgeon is in town now from Augusta, It is said that Mr J M Sturgeon will arrive in a few days, and that both will remain here until the fall. The ladies of Lake City have organized a division of the Women's National Service league. Mrs D M Eppe is commandant, and Mesdames W M Severance, T J Cottingham and W H Hodges are local division commandants; Miss Vonnie Sing'etary, secretary; Mrs M D Nesmith, treasurer, and Miss Leah Nachman, chairman of committee on publicity. All the women's clubs in town have disbanded, as the ladies feel that it is their duty to aid the country in the supreme test now upon us, and they purpose to assist in making as comfortable as possible those who will be called upon to take a part in driving the scourge of Europe off the earth. In other words the laHiffl of this town will "do their bit." At the great preparedness meeting in Florence last Thursday the writer saw on one building the Stars and Stripes, the union jack and the tri-colors flying together. This was very probably the first time the flags of the United States. France and England have been seen together in this section. The baseball season was officially opened Tuesday with a game between the "Sons of Labor" and the "Sons of Rest." The score was 13 to 9 in favor of the last named. A series of meetings are being held at the Presbyterian church this week. Mr D L Smith, of Walterboro, who is in the food department of government, was in town on business Monday and Tuesday. The preparedness mass meeting advertised to be held here yesterday at which Mr Robert Lathan, editor of The News and Courier, was to be the principal speaker came off at noon, much interest being manifested by citizens of the community. It was greatly regretted that Mr Lathan could not be present on account of indisposition. The speakers were: Rev Wm Way of Charleston and Mr C A McFadden, of the Clemson college staff. The remarks by these gentlemen were listened to with profound interest and evidently had a very beneficent affect. The meeting was ostensibly to im: press upon every individual the imI portance of food preparedness, a proposition that is vitally necessary j at this particular time, and in the i interest of which a general camI paign is being waged with strenuloQi'tu thronohont the South. The plan for food preparedness is the raising of a greater quantity of food supplies on our own farms and in our garden plots, practicing rigid economy in the preparation of the family menues, etc. A committee consisting of five different parties has been appointed to canvass Williamsburg county, visiting each community and urging the necessity of food preparedness.
