Abbeville, October 20:?Mrs A S Thomas, wife of the superintendent of the Abbeville Cotton mills, com0, mitted suicide in her home here today. Particulars of the affair are rather meaner. These are the bare facts: This morning Mr Thomas and his wife rode out of town for an hour or so in their car, then returned. The husband, going to his duties at the mill, and the wife and their child and nurse returning home. Shortly after entering the house Mrs Thomas took up a pistol, and placing it to j * - * * l- - 1* L I her oreast, snot nersen mruugn me heart, dying instantly. Mr Thomas was called from the mill and immediately summoned i physicians, but nothing could be; done, as she was already dead. As far as has developed there were no witnesses to the tragedy.! Editor County Record: Doubtless many of your readers will be interested in our thirteen-day hike. October 1 the entire tenth division, composed of the South Carolina, Kentucky, Ohio, Massachusetts and Michigan regiments, a total of about 22,000 officers and men. started off. The first day we carried nothing but our fighting packs and rifles and traveled about twelve miles. We reached our camp ground about 4 o'clock,tired and dusty. After we - - - * -1 I A. i_ _ had pitched our tents we an iook a dip in the Rio Grande, not faraway. Next day the trip was short but hard. Each had to carry a roll,consisting of one blanket, a sheet, half tent,one poncho,a suit of underwear and an entrenching tool, with rifle and side arms. Only a few had blistered feet after reaching the second camp ground. The third day's march was about fifteen miles. The sun was hot and the boys began to think the third camp ground was unreachable, but they stuck to it and got there. We rested up a day, and those with sore feet were treated, that they might be ready for the march next day. They told us that they could find no fault in us, and Col Springs said in his eighteen years of service he had seen no regulars drill better than we. He also told us to be saving with water, which is very scarce there. It was shipped in oil cars from El Paso each day, and we had only about one quart to use during the march. The fifth day we marched into LasCruces, N M. The third battalion of South Carolina was the advance provost guard. After staying there four days we started our journey back to Camp Stewart in the rain. It took five days to go and four to return. The weather was fine going, but we had rain while returning. The last day we made over twenty miles, and not a man dropped out. Co I made the entire march of 120 miles without losing a man. We, the Grand Jury of Williamsburg county, having completed all business and having passed upon all bills that have come before us at this, the last term of the court of [ general sessions for the year, 1916, J do herewith make our report: We desire to express our thanks to his Honor, Judge George E Prince, presiding Judge, for his courteous treatment and for the able manner in which he explained the law* to us j in his charge, thereby enabling us to j attend to all business and pass upon all bills that'have come before us inj an intelligent and proper manner, j We also wish to express our appre-: ciation of the services rendered us by the Solicitor and the Acting-Solicitor, Mr Hirsch, for the services rendered by them in assisting us in passing on the indictments that were handed us for consideration. We have passed on all bills that have been presented to us; of those which we have passed upon quite a number were for larceny; we are very sorry to see this, but w*e trust' that with the efficient help of our officials there will not be anything; like this number at the next term of | court. We beg to report that most of the Magistrates of the county and the rural policemen haye presented their books and we find them to be well kept and apparently correct in every re spect; however, we would recommend that the Magistrates and the rural policemen be provided with and use the Magistrate's Criminal Docket, Form One; for we believe that their records would be kept in much better manner by the use of this docket. It becomes the duty of the County Board ofCommissioners toelect aRoad Engineer for Willirmsburg county for the year, 19*17, and we would recommend that the County Board of Commissioners, U3e every means A 1 -1 1__ t i. to secure a tnorougniy competent and efficient man for this position. It has been brought to our attention that the road from Hebron church to Holiday's mill, the road from Hebron church to the Clarendon county line, and the road from Lenud's Ferry to the Broomstraw Road, have not been permanently worked within the past six years, and we ask that the road engineer, or other proper official, make a report to the grand jury, advising as to the reason for these roads not having been worked for such a length of time. At the summer term of court, we recommended that the walls of the court house and jury rooms be recalcimined, and we are very sorry to report that we find our recommendation has not been complied with, and we again make this recommendation and trust the same will be done before the next term of court.; All of which is respectfully submit-1 ted.
