From a gentleman living on Lak Swamp, in Horry county, the re porter learned that a strange ani mal was causing some alarm in tha usually quiet community. It wa stated that last Friday mornini Patrick Gerald found where one o his hogs had been killed and parti; eaten by some cloven-foot animal There was indications that the hoj was dragged for a considerable dis tance to the fence jam before beinj devoured, which showed that th varmint was of large size, and specu fc* lation was ripe as to what species i was. some declaring that the tracl was that of a bear, while other claimed it to be a wild cat. Saturday morning Mr Gerald' little son left home riding a mule He carried a basket of corn to feei the geese, which wp? in a distan field. On his return he noticed i large animal crou hing along th road side in il busnes, and the bo fearing an attack, p it whip to h: ii. jit and get u.v." r.j rust as !v could. Thestrange animal gave chase ail the time keeping in the bushes The chase was kept up for mor than half a mile, and when near M Gerald's home, the animal scratchei up the ground and disappeared Aerain hounds were secured and pu on the trail, but they refused to rui it. The people over there are mucl worked up over the matter and de clare that they propose to hunt unti they find and kill the intruder.Mv Vi i < En terjtrise. Native cattle, it is as8 serted, are immune to the tick. s There could be no greater mistake. r Cattle may become immune to the fever but none of them ever becomes I. immune to the loss of the blood that the tick sucks out. With steers this loss means reduced weight and lower prices; with dairy cows it means smaller milk production and corres" pondingly smaller profits. Government tests conducted simulh taneously, under identical conditions, e with ticky and tick-free herds show . that ticks reduce the milk flow from ,s 18 to 42 per cent, the exact amount ,t depending, of course, upon the e severity of the infestation. Transel late this statement into dollars and g cents and the true meaning of the tick to the dairy industry becomes obvious. s Let us assume that a man owns a e herd of twenty cows each of which, under normal conditions, yields eight % s; quarts a day and that he can sell jj the milk for five cents a quart. His fj f gross revenue then is $8 a day from ? f his herd. If a few ticks are allow- 0 2 ed to feed upon his cows and their | .. production is cut down eighteen per \ ' cent, his gross revenue is only $6.55 a day. If each cow is milked on an average 200 days in the year, his an- j nual gross revenue is lowered from 6 $1,600 to $1,310. This is the minimum loss from the tick. If the in^ festation is very heavy and the production lowered 42 per cent the rev3 enue is cut from $1,600 to $930?a jj ^ loss of $670 a year. | This loss is absolute; there is no 1 v ; reduction in the cost or labor of . feeding to offset it. Neither is it possible to overcome it by increas- ? ing the amount of feed. "Cows ? carrying ticks," says the govern- I e ment report of the tests, "did not ^ increase their flow of milk when the ^ feed was increased as did the tickfree cows." In other words, the g feed went to the ticks and not to the cows. ? The practical experience of the ^ people confirms the conclusions of t the Government investigators. In the tick-infested sections of the South dairying is not an important industry. The farmer may cling, if he wishes, to the delusion that thei, tick is harmless to immune cattle,'! but he is not likely to put his faith i ' to the test bv investing in dairy i I ' I cows. He knows from his own and j 61 i his neighbor's experience that thev; I* j , will make little money for him. On 1 ! I the other hand, where the tick has j ^ been eradicated, dairying is coming | more and more into favor.
