After two years Whiting retired, t and James A Pettigrew, cashier oi the Farmers & Mechanics bank of Florence, owned and managed bj Ragsdale, was appointed to fill the : vacancy,as appears by the official di r. rectory of the House of Represent atives. Since Mr Pettigrew's ap pointment he has never ceased tc perform in Florence the duties of ' cashier and has never performed ans services as clerk to Mr Ragsdale ir . Washington. One month later Ragsdale sent to Pettigrew, ic 1 Florence,a check drawn on tHe Treasurer of the United States, payable to Penny,for $100. This checkmarked paid, is on file in the office oi South Trimble,Clerk of the House it Washington. It was endorsed bj Penny over to Ragsdale's bank al Ragsdale's direction. Penny didn't get a cent of the $100, On the contrary $ 30 of it was return, cil to Clerk Trimble to pay somebody in Washington for doing the work,ana the balance, $70?KW? applied by Rags, dale's bank,a I Ragsdale's direction, as a credit on Penny's personal note. Ragsdale has thus smitten the rock of the Treasury fo the tune of something over $5,000 inside of four years.
