The first international women's temperance congress was opened in Philadelphia forty years ago, inaugurating a movement which has since gained world-wide influence. The temperance crusade of the fair sex had its origin in Hillsboro, 0, in 1873, and the following year the National Woman's Christian Temperance Union was organized in Cleveland. The infant society alt most immediately began preparations for a world congress of the fair foes of rum to be held at the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876, and the congress attracted delegates from many countries. In 1883 the World's Woman's Christian Temperance Union was launched by Frances E Willard, and it immediately gained a large following in England, and has since spread to more than fifty countries and colonies. As a result of the agitation of mis ana similar societies tne temperance movement has made great progress and the white ribbon of the W C T U has become a familiar emblem in all parts of the world.
