( On April 17 an election will be held at Kingstree for a four-mill increase in the tax levy for the benefit of the school. No matter bow exalted or humble a person may be, there is one sacred duty which lie owes to nuuianny and which it is imperatively incumbent upon him to pay. That duty is the protection and fostering of our public school system. We are living in an age of education and advancing iritellectual development, and the human mind that is deprived of the best advantages obtainable will be hampered and hindered at every step in life. It matters not how bright ,nor how acute the infantile mind may be,if that mind is denied the advan tages of education, then the child grown to maturity will be retarded r?f it.Q intpl. ttnu uuiiuuavw ?^wwwwv v* ww ...vv. lectual deficiencies. It will be a living monument to the neglect and the indifference of its parents. It will be a mark of shame and a blight upon the community that reared it in its ignorance. It will lie an object of pity where it should be one of pride. Our school system should lie encouraged aud raised to the highest point of efficiency. The instructors should lie upheld and given to understand that they have the backing of a united community,and that the community expects satisfactory results. Let us raak? any other improvements or new departures that the welfare of our children requires. v We have brought these children into the world, and in their infancy and youth they are helpless. It is our duty to give them an education that will enable them to successfully cope with the intricate problems of existence that will confront them later in life. To do less would be to neglect a sacred duty, to shame the innocent ones for whose very existence we are responsible. Let us keep our schools and our children in mind. Let us study their welfare individually and collectively. Let us leave no stone unturned that will advance their moral and material interests. For the man who honors his offspring is honored of men. Heretofore either a lack of time or space or both has prevented The Record from commenting \tpon the various aspirants for political honors who threw their hats into the arena by publishing their announcement in its columns. As a newspaper it has no favorites and its columns are open to each and every candidate for the purpose of airing his views and stating his position to the voters of the county in his own way, provided he pays the advertising rate fixed by it for such matter. The first candidate to announce himself for office was Mr Julius J Hanna, who seeks the office of Coroner, which is at present held by Mr H U1 Kinder. Mr Hanna, like each of the other candidates whose announcement appears in this paper, is a native born son of old Williamsburg and numbers among her deserving citizens. Messrs Geo J Graham.J Y McGill, W E Brockinton, W T Wilkins, J H Epps and H U Kinder, aspirants for the Sheriff's office,all valued friends of The Record, are men of merit,and patriotic to the core, and regardless of anything we say for or against any one of them personally, we are confident that the voters in the com ing primary will make no mistake in the selection of a Sheriff.
