$63,331) FINE ST 08AH66.I I STUDENTS OF STATE COLORED COLLEGE JUMP FROM SECOND STORY TO SAVE THEIR LIVES. Orangeburg, March 20:?Forty-six teachers and students were injured at an early hour this morning, when the administration building, the greater part of which was used as a girls' dormitory,of the State Colored college, was totally destroyed by fire. Several are considered in a very crit ical condition, and it is feared that two are fatally injured. It seems that the fire, the origin of which is not known, had gained considerable headway before discovery, making it rather difficult for the occupants, about 350, to escape, and in the excitement many jumped from the second story. Only a very small part of the contents was saved, and the majority of the students lost their clothes. Everything possible is being done for the relief of the injured ones and the care of the others. Eight physicians were pressed into service this morning, and they were kept busy several hours attending the injured. A part of the president's house was made into an improvised hospital, and the relief work was carried on with as much dispatch as possible. Some of the students were Riven temporary quarters in a dormitory at Claflin university, which adjoins the State college, while temporary accommodations were secured elsewhere for some of the others. President Wilkinson states that arrangements will be made to provide for the studeqts, so as not to interrupt their work any more than necessary. Some will be allowed to go home long enough to replenish their wardrobes. The building, which was a large two-story brick structure, and contents were valued at approximately $60,000. About half of this is covered by insurance. _ vnai iruiu uiuca. Cades, March 21:?Bean planting is the present occupation of the farmers jn this section. Hunfsville, Alabama, Woman Gains Twentyseven Pounds on Three Bottles of Tanlac. SUFFERED FOR YEARS. | Was Twice Examined and Each Time Was Told Operation Would be Her Only Hope. "I have just finished my third nf TWilne and have eained twenty-seven pounds," was the truly remarkable statement made by Mrs Chas Pedden, who resides at 550 Mill St, Huntsville, Ala. Mrs Penden is one of the best known and highly respected women of that thriving little city, where she has made her home for a number of years. "When I commenced taking Tanlac, "she continued,"I weighed only ninety-eight pounds; now I weigh one hundred and twenty-five pounds and never felt letter in my life. For years I have suffered with a bad form of stomach trouble, constipation and pains in my side and back. At times the pains took the form of torture, and I was twice examined and each time I was told that I had appendicitis and that an operation would be my only hope. I had fallen off until I only weighed ninety-eight pounds and was so ' T nAiilil Vvowl 1 IT nrof owilintl ?CUIv IWUIU naiuij gw U.V/?.V.. "I had no appetite at all scarcely and what little I did eat would cause gas to form in my stomach, which gave me palpitation of the heart, sick headaches and a dizzy feeling about the head. When these spells came on me I would get awfully nervous. I worried about myself till I could rest and sleep but little. "1 had fallen off until I was almost 'skin and bones' and my strength and energy were slowly leaving me. I had a dread of the future and could see nothing hut the operating table and the knife. I had a perfect horror of an operation, but had made up my mind that it was either life or death and prepared to submit to it. I had made all preparations for the operation and called on my sister to tell her good bye and I did not know whether I would live to sye her again or not. My sister begged and pleaded with me not to allow them to cut on me and told me to wait and try a good tonic for a while. The next day as 1 returned from the consultation room I thought of * * 1 1 Till ] ? what sne saiu, ana,as i nau iieuru ?u much about Tanlac I decided to try it as a last resort and stopped at Gilbert's drug store and got a little. Of course I had lost heart and had no faith in the medicine, but to please my sister I made up my mind to take it,and, oh,what a happy day that was for me! 4 41 never returned for the operation but just kept taking Tanlac. Right from the start I Ixigan feeling better. The medicine seemed to take hold right at once. It had a soothing effect and in a few days I felt no pain at all. #I was so happy over the wonderful improvement in my condition that I sent for my neighbors to tell them how much better I felt. I sent and got another bottle of Tanlac, and have just finished taking my third lx)ttle and feel like I have been made all over again into a new woman. 4 4As I have said l>efore, I now weigh 125 pounds and my improvement has Wn so rapid that none of my clothes are big enough for me. I will have to make them all over again. I now have a ravenous appetite ami my husband says 1 am simply eating him out of house and home. I have even gone back to my coffee, which I was told not to touch. Those terrible pains in my back and head have all disappeared and 1 sleep like a child. I am no longer nervous and when I get up in the mornings I feel refreshed, cheerrul and bright. 1 am jiow able to attend to my household duties and I feel as if I had started life all over again. My husband is highly delighted and my recovery is the talk of the neighlnwhood. I do nothing but rejoice all day long over the recovery of my health and I praise Tan lac to everybody. | "I feel so grateful for my escape from the operating table and the knife that you may publish what I have said; you may, if you wish, tell other women suffering as I was to come to me and I will he glad to ten tnem an aoout my ease.
