At 2:47 this afternoon the jury in the case of J J Mendenhall, charged with the murder of Miss Susie Elliot of Tampa, brought in a verdict of | guilty in the first degree with a recommendation to mercy. The jury had been out seven hours. As Foreman Allen said the words that meant life imprisonment for her husband,Mrs Mendenhall winced, then sobbed otit loud. She threw her arms about her husband. MissMendenhall, sobbing wildly, threw herself upon her father's breast. Mendenhall remained calm. { It is probable the defence will ask for a new trial, and failing that, will appeal to the supreme court. Attorney General West has attended all sessions of the trial, familiarizing himself with the case. . Mendenhall was Convicted on a charge of the murder of xMiss Susie Elliot on the night of July 2, when the bodies of the yoang woman and her mother were burned to death od the old Green Spring road. His counsel gave notice of a motion for a new trial, and offered a formal motion for a stay of sentence. The date for arguing these motions has not (been set. Scenes in the court room followIing the reading of the verdict were dramatic, the wife and the daughter, | who have been by the side of the ^ utfienuauo Uliwuguuui uic ni:auiJir 4 broke into passionate weeping. The I defendant, who has exhibited marked I composure throughout the hearing, | consoled them and told them to be brave. Another indictment charging Mendenhall with the murder of Mrs Bessie Eliot, mother of the dead girl, is pending against him. The State threataned prosecution for white slavery as the motive in the case, and Mendenhall admitted on the stand that he had taken Miss Eliot to Chicago.and that he was trying to effect a settlement when the tradedy occurred. rair V \ is at the . will be sit. f-s\ Ladies' and Children's cotton and wool at prices ets, Comforts, White Bed ises, Towels of all kinds, rnishings of all kinds. ce and up-to-date line of ; a complete line of Gents' 'ices. s.
